\n5-page paper based an interview with an older adult (65+).  <\/span>In the interview you will explore their
\nunderstanding of some concepts related to aging and ask about some of their
\nlife experiences.<\/span><\/span><\/b><\/p>\n

PURPOSE<\/span><\/b><\/p>\n

The purpose of this assignment is for you to summarize
\nwhat you learn<\/u> after <\/span>interviewing an older adult (65+ years).  <\/span>During the interview you will ask the questions
\nprovided below. NOTE: the paper should not<\/u> include \u2018transcripts\u2019 of the
\ninterviews, but rather a summary of what you understood from the interview.<\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/span><\/p>\n

PREPARATION FOR THE INTERVIEW<\/span><\/b><\/p>\n

    \n
  1. Choose
    \n a setting with little distraction. Avoid loud lights or noises and ensure
    \n the interviewee is comfortable. Often, they may feel more comfortable at
    \n their own places of work or homes.<\/span><\/li>\n
  2. Explain
    \n the purpose of the interview.<\/span><\/li>\n
  3. Address
    \n confidentiality and that this information will be read by the professor
    \n for the class.   <\/span>No one else
    \n will have access to this information, but anything exceptionally
    \n concerning will be reported since the instructor is a mandated reporter.  <\/span>Note that you have the option of
    \n changing the names of the respondents and may want to ask if they prefer
    \n you to do that.<\/span><\/li>\n
  4. Explain
    \n the format of the interview. Explain the type of interview you are
    \n conducting and its nature. Let them know it is okay to ask you questions
    \n throughout the interview.<\/span><\/li>\n
  5. Don’t
    \n count on your memory to recall their answers!  You may want to ask
    \n for permission to record the interview.<\/a><\/a><\/a><\/span><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n

    <\/a><\/a>CONDUCTING THE INTERVIEW<\/span><\/b><\/p>\n

      \n
    1. Ask
      \n one question at a time.  <\/span>You may add
      \n a follow up question not included in your original list of questions IF
      \n the original question wasn\u2019t answered to your satisfaction.<\/span><\/li>\n
    2. Attempt
      \n to remain as neutral as possible. That is, don’t show strong
      \n emotional reactions to their responses. The best interviewers act as if they’ve
      \n heard it all before!<\/span><\/li>\n
    3. Encourage
      \n responses with occasional nods of the head, “uh huh”s, etc.<\/span><\/li>\n
    4. Be
      \n careful about the appearance when note taking. That is, if you jump
      \n to take a note, it may appear as if you’re surprised or very pleased about
      \n an answer, which may influence answers to future questions.<\/span><\/li>\n
    5. Provide
      \n transition between major topics, e.g., “we’ve been talking about
      \n (some topic) and now I’d like to move on to (another topic).”<\/span><\/li>\n
    6. Don’t
      \n lose control of the interview. This can occur when respondents stray
      \n to another topic, take too long to answer a question, etc.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n

      \n (or do) you work in a paid position outside of the home?  <\/span>How did you make the decision to do
      \n that?  <\/span>Have you retired?  <\/span>If not, when do you plan to retire?  <\/span>Why?<\/span><\/p>\n

      \n <\/span><\/span><\/span>What
      \n do you know about Social Security or other benefits to people over the age of
      \n 65?  <\/span>What changes would you like to see
      \n in programming\/ benefits\/ policy as it relates to older adults?<\/span><\/p>\n

      \n has been the biggest change you\u2019ve experienced because of the general aging
      \n process?  <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

      1. Clarify
        \n your written notes.  <\/span>Go back through
        \n your notes from the interview to make sense of any information that may be
        \n unclear.<\/span><\/li>\n
      2. Write down any observations made during the interview. For
        \n example, where did the interview occur and when, how long did it last, was
        \n the respondent particularly nervous at any time? Were there any surprises
        \n during the interview? <\/span><\/span><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n

        WRITING YOUR PAPER<\/span><\/b><\/p>\n

        The
        \npaper should be double-spaced with 12-inch font.  <\/span><\/span>Your paper should be free of mechanical errors
        \nand demonstrate a professional tone as opposed to a conversational tone.  <\/span><\/span>The questions should not be numbered.  <\/span>The answers to your questions should be
        \nintegrated into your paper in paragraph form, although you may use phrases
        \nlike, \u201cWhen asked about ________, she answered with ____________.\u201d  <\/span>A title page is not necessary for this paper.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

        • Start by giving a general
          \n overview of your interview.  <\/span>Describe
          \n the demographic characteristics (age, gender, race, living situation, etc.)
          \n of the individuals you interviewed.  <\/span>Then u<\/span>se two words to describe the individual you
          \n interviewed and explain why you chose those words.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

          \n<\/span><\/span><\/span>Find and explain three
          \nspecific connections between your interview and content we have learned in HDF
          \n247WI.  <\/span>These connections should be quite
          \nspecific; for example, if your interviewee discusses physical aging and health
          \nconcerns, you might relate that to the wear and tear theory or discuss it in context
          \nof the belief that aging is (or is not) a disease.<\/span><\/p>\n
