Objective<\/span>: <\/b>Discuss the social context and historical events around the 1964 Tokyo Olympics by drawing on both Ichikawa’s film and Yu Miri’s novel. <\/p>\n

Instructions<\/span>:<\/b> After watching Ichikawa’s film and completing the reading from Tokyo Ueno Station <\/em>for this week, select two scenes from each to formulate a reflection on the social issues at play in Japan both domestically and internationally. This will take the form of at least two different sequences from the film marked by timecode and two separate passages from the novel cited by page number. <\/p>\n

Requirements<\/span>: <\/b>You must define the <\/span>theme<\/strong> <\/span>that your selections are related to with regard to the 1964 Olympics. For example, you could focus on Japan’s status as an industrialized nation; the changes or differences of space within urban Tokyo, or the status of homelessness in Japan in the postwar decades, just to name a few. Your focus could also rest on more formal elements of cinematic structure (how the film does or does not conveys the games) or narrative voice from the novel (who is telling the story, how, and why?).  Your response should be at least 400 words and must include at least <\/span>two quotes from the novel <\/span>Tokyo Ueno Station<\/em><\/span> <\/span>(Yu Miri, 2014)<\/u> <\/span>and<\/strong> <\/span>two referenced scenes from <\/span>Tokyo Olympiad.<\/span> <\/em><\/u>(Ichikawa Kon, 1964) that relate to your overall response paper theme. <\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
