In this view, Maslow argued that humans have five needs categories: physiological, safety, belongingness, esteem, and self-actualization. Using this model for intervening with a mother experiencing postnatal depression, her initial needs are those of food and shelter (Maslow’s Hierarchy of Needs – Learning Theories, 2020). This also encompasses consideration for things such as nutrition, sleep, physical well-being, and freedom from abuse or violence at home, all of which may significantly be influenced by postpartum depression. Suppose these foundational domains have any deficiencies identified during counseling and patient education sessions (Maslow’s Hierarchy of Needs – Learning Theories, 2020). In that case, attention should initially focus on achieving stability in these fundamental areas, such as advising on dietary choices, sleep hygiene techniques, dealing with any medical issues, and linking the mother to domestic violence resources if needed.

Once her physiological and safety needs are met, the next step would be to determine whether she needs love, belonging, and healthy attachment to her child and partner/family, according to Maslow’s hierarchy. This can have severe effects on the mother-child bond as well as on intimate relationships. For instance, one such intervention may be assisting the patient in having skin-to-skin contact with the baby while still in the hospital, teaching approaches that promote bonding and foster attachment, involving couples in family therapy to cement relations and support systems between them, providing connection between mother and other members of postpartum support groups who can help reduce isolation (Hayre-Kwan et al., 2021). The following stage after relational belongingness is building up a mother’s self-esteem, which usually dips with postpartum depression – which may entail behavioral and cognitive techniques of noting unrealistically negative thoughts, training meditation and compassion for oneself, offering tips on taking care of oneself, helping her set reasonable goals for herself as a new mom (Hayre-Kwan et al., 2021). Lastly, normalizing her experiences and feelings is crucial.

Finally, Maslow’s topmost hierarchy level is self-actualization, which means to become the best person and realize one’s full capabilities. However, it should not be the priority when treating postpartum depression, although the ultimate goal of primary care mental health intervention is helping a mother move towards being a balanced and satisfied individual (Xu et al., 2021). Additionally, this could mean assisting her in finding out what meaningful goals she can put effort towards, developing creativity and personal growth. According to Maslow’s hierarchy that guides all doctors in holistically assessing and planning a cure for one patient at a time in women’s health, different mothers have different needs ranging from basic to transcendental (Xu et al., 2021). This postulates an integrated stepwise process that serves to promote sustainable healing for mothers who are living with the challenges of postpartum depression.

References

Hayre-Kwan, S., Quinn, B., Chu, T., Orr, P., & Snoke, J. In my current role as a psychiatrist nurse and my future role as a psychiatrist nurse practitioner, social learning theory is beneficial to assess the patient’s behavior and implement behavioral therapies. Social learning theory focuses on observing and modeling behavior, attitude, and emotional reactions. Adults and adolescents are admitted to mental health hospitals for their suicidal, homicidal, or aggressive reactions to specific events or situations or towards specific people, as they cannot accept and deal with emotional breakdowns with healthy coping skills.

Bandura’s social learning theory focused on observational learning. People learn behavior from others. For example, home is the first school for the children. They learn basic manners from their family members around them, especially from their parents. Children are observable and always surprise us by acting in the same manner that we act in front of them unintentionally, which can be good or bad. Observational learning or influences of other behaviors is one of the biggest reasons for increasing substance abuse in adolescents. Parents and peers have the strongest effect on adolescents. It can be a direct effect or indirect. Observing their peers doing drugs, being offered by them, or observing parents drinking alcohol or smoking at home makes them think that it is acceptable behavior (Trucco, 2020). A Every patient’s behavior is unique, and their reactions to the same situations are different. Before implementing the treatment, it is important to know about the patient’s triggers, stressors, and warning signs for behavioral emergencies and place them in an environment that will be more beneficial for them. It is also important to learn about the patient’s strength and motivation for the treatment. Bandura also focused on attention, retention, motor reproduction, and motivation (Mcleod, 2024). A person with these four strengths will be more flexible with behavioral modification techniques. Some patients are more beneficial in a group setting than others in individual therapies. It is important to learn about a patient’s behavior. Bandura’s social learning and social cognitive learning are beneficial in mental health nursing.

Mcleod, S. The five categories in order are physiological, safety, belonging and love, esteem, and self-actualization (Carducci, 2020). The goal is to meet each category of needs in order (Ahmad Dar & Sakthivel, 2022). Nurse practitioners can use this model with success in the psychiatric setting.

Assessment, counseling, and teaching for patients should be approached using Maslow’s Human Motivation and Hierarchy of Basic Human Needs. My chosen specialty is psychiatric nurse practitioner. I think this model can be used well when working with patients admitted to a detox unit, allowing for a trauma-informed approach. Patients coming in for detox need to have their physiological needs met first. A COWS or CIWA with vitals should be done. COWS and CIWA are two assessment tools used to assess opioid withdrawal and alcohol withdrawal, respectively (Brust-Sisti et al., 2023). Next, safety needs to be assessed. Does this patient have social support? Is this patient employed? Do they have access to resources? This is typically done in the initial psychiatric interview with detoxing patients in order to assess protective and risk factors outside of treatment. From there, counseling and treatment can work on belonging and love, esteem, and self-actualization through therapy and group sessions.

Ahmad Dar, S., & Sakthivel, P.
