You will have the 3 opportunities to complete your essay.<\/strong> <\/span>You will have 90 minutes ( each time) to plan, write, and proofread an essay on the topic provided in the assessment. Your topic will be provided once you begin the assignment.  

Make sure you read and understand all instructions before you begin.<\/strong> The assignment will be open book and you are expected to use specific examples from the <\/span>A Midsummer Night’s Dream<\/em>. Using in-text citations is important; however, you do not need to create a Works Cited page. <\/p>\n

In your essay, you should introduce the subject and then either:<\/p>\n

  • explain the subject you selected or<\/li>\n
  • take a position about your subject and support it.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

    Your instructor will pay special attention to whether you<\/strong>:<\/p>\n

        Students:  Please understand how I will review and evaluate your <\/span> Timed Writing Essays (Shakespeare) due Sunday, March 31, 11:59 pm. <\/strong> <\/span>I will consider the following<\/span>:<\/p>\n

        1. <\/span>Did you follow the Directions?  If<\/strong> not,  I will go no further; there is no need! This cannot be a satisfactory paper.<\/strong><\/p>\n

        2.  If you followed the directions, I will proceed:  I check for <\/span>correct MLA  formatting and documentation <\/strong> <\/span>throughout your paper, including proper header, margins, spacing and research techniques. Did you use updated 9th edition MLA?  (5 %)<\/p>\n

        3. Next, <\/span>effective Essay Structure<\/strong>:  Do you have an effective <\/span>Thesis Sentence<\/strong> <\/span>that is accurately placed in <\/span>the Introduction <\/span><\/strong>developed in the <\/span>Body<\/strong> Paragraphs<\/strong> <\/span>(at least  3 body paragraphs), and a <\/span>Concluding Paragraph<\/strong>? Generally 5-12 sentences per paragraph.  (5 %) <\/p>\n

        4. I then review for effective <\/span>College- level Grammar<\/strong>, which includes  Sentence Variety, Comma Usage, effective use of semicolon ( if you are not comfortable using semicolon, don\u2019t), correct and consistent person (POV); remember that this is an argument <\/span>(first or third<\/span><\/strong> <\/span>person <\/strong><\/span>point <\/strong>of view<\/strong> must<\/strong> be used for<\/strong> <\/span>this essay)<\/strong> <\/span>with credible support\u2014 no personal opinions, no general \u201cyou\u201d.   (5 %) <\/p>\n

        5. Finally, have you created an <\/span>effective Argument<\/strong>?  That is the Strategy of Writing on which this paper is based.  Your paper should not be a narrative nor a summary.  Remember our focus in this class is on CRITICAL THINKING… this is your chance to shine.  CREATIVE THINKING is also valued, i.e., the way  or the \u201cspin\u201d  by which your argument is formed in your thesis sentence and developed in your body paragraphs.  (5 %)<\/p>\n

        There you have it… THIS ESSAY IS WORTH A TOTAL OF 20 POINTS POSSIBLE!<\/p>\n

        Tips for Excelling on Timed Writing Assignments<\/span>
        Step One: Narrow the topic. (Prewriting)<\/span>
        A. If there is more than one topic available<\/span> <\/span>select the one you wish to write about<\/span>.<\/span>
        B.<\/span> <\/span>Narrow<\/span> <\/span>the broad topic you have selected to a specific topic you will explore.<\/span>
        Example topic<\/span>:<\/span> <\/span>A place that has hidden dangers.<\/span>
        To narrow the topic above, I would first need to identify the place I will discuss.<\/span>
        Example narrowed topic<\/span>:<\/span> <\/span>The kitchen.<\/span>
        C.<\/span> <\/span>Brainstorm<\/span> <\/span>a list of the hidden dangers that are in the kitchen.<\/span>
        Example brainstorm of dangers<\/span>:<\/span> <\/span>stove, fire, knives, shock, poison, burns,<\/span>
        D. Now that you have a list of dangers, you need to<\/span> <\/span>select three<\/span> <\/span>that you will discuss in your paper.<\/span>
        Example three reasons<\/span>:<\/span> <\/span>fires, knives, and poison<\/span>
        E. Finally, you need to decide in<\/span> <\/span>what order<\/span> <\/span>you wish to discuss the three reasons in your paper.<\/span>
        You can choose to start with the most important and move to the least important or start with the least<\/span>
        important and move to the most important.<\/span>
        Example order<\/span>:<\/span> <\/span>poison, knives, and fires<\/span>
        Step Two: Draft the thesis statement. (We are still prewriting!)<\/span>
        A. The<\/span> <\/span>thesis<\/span> <\/span>is one sentence that will state what you will be writing about<\/span>\u2014<\/span>specifically.<\/span>
        It needs to include the topic, how you have narrowed it, and the three reasons in the order you will<\/span>
        discuss them.<\/span>
        Example thesis:<\/span> <\/span>The kitchen is a room with many hidden dangers because of the dangers of poison,<\/span>
        knives, and fires.<\/span>
        B. So the thesis above has all the vital information, but i<\/span>t doesn\u2019t sound so good. Now you need to \u201csmooth\u201d it<\/span>
        out by<\/span> <\/span>revising.<\/span>
        Example revised thesis<\/span>:<\/span> <\/span>The kitchen has the potential to be a dangerous place for children due to the<\/span>
        hazards of poison, knives, and fires.<\/span>
        This is better, but it could still use a bit more work. I think you get the idea….<\/span>
        Step Three: Begin writing.<\/span>
        Paragraph One:<\/span> <\/span>Introduction that includes thesis statement.<\/span>
        The first paragraph introduces the reader to the topic you will be discussing and how you will present it.<\/span>
        You can write this paragraph in many ways but a way that works well for many students is to start with<\/span>
        general statements about the topic and move to more specific statements, ending with the thesis<\/span>
        statement.<\/span>
        Paragraph Two:<\/span> <\/span>This paragraph will develop the first point in your thesis statement.<\/span>
        For the example above, you would explain how the poison in the kitchen is a hazard.<\/span>
        Paragraph Three:<\/span> <\/span>This paragraph will develop the second point in your thesis statement. For the example<\/span>
        above, you would explain how the knives in the kitchen are a hazard.<\/span>
        Paragraph Four:<\/span> <\/span>This paragraph will develop the third point in your thesis statement.<\/span>
        For the example above, I would explain how fires in the kitchen is a hazard.<\/span>
        Paragraph Five:<\/span> <\/span>Conclusion that includes a restating of the thesis.<\/span>
        The conclusion is a review of the essay, stated in a new way. DO NOT RECOPY THE THESIS INTO THE<\/span>
        LAST PARAGRAPH! No one wants to read the same sentence twice.<\/span>
        Step Four: Proofread and Revise.<\/span>
        During the timed writing assignment, you will probably not have time to recopy your paper. You should have<\/span>
        time, however, to re-read it and make some corrections. Also, be sure to give your essay a title.<\/span><\/p>\n
