Penn State University is <\/span><\/span><\/span>a very large organization. Its annual budget of $8.5 billion is larger than the GDP of 40 countries<\/span><\/span>!<\/span><\/span> <\/span><\/span><\/span>It has about 50 budgetary units, such as 13 Colleges, 23 Campuses, Academic Affairs, Research, Applied Research Lab, Student Life, Community Outreach, Finance & Business, Investments & Endowment Management, Office of Physical Plant, Allied Business Services, PS-Health. Penn State is committed to integrating sustainability in all aspects of its operations. <\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/span><\/p>\n

The purpose of this project is to <\/span><\/span><\/span>understand the organizational complexity of PSU and its multifaceted <\/span><\/span><\/span>environment, and<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span>enhance<\/span><\/span> <\/span>sustainab<\/span><\/span>ility strategies for<\/span><\/span> <\/span>its <\/span><\/span><\/span>various <\/span><\/span><\/span>units <\/span><\/span><\/span>as a way of making the <\/span><\/span><\/span>overall <\/span><\/span><\/span>university <\/span><\/span><\/span>sustainable. Many unit leaders (Deans, Chancellors, Vice Presidents) are already embarked on this task. Many have established Sustainability Council, sustainability Champions\/Chair\/Director <\/span><\/span><\/span>and Sustainability charters or plans <\/span><\/span><\/span>for their units. <\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/span><\/p>\n

This is a team project. Each team will select<\/span><\/span> <\/span><\/span><\/span>one<\/span><\/span> <\/span><\/span><\/span>unit<\/span><\/span> <\/span>of PSU <\/span><\/span><\/span>to work on. The team will r<\/span><\/span>esearch <\/span><\/span><\/span>and assess the <\/span><\/span><\/span>current <\/span><\/span><\/span>sustainability position<\/span><\/span> <\/span>and<\/span><\/span> <\/span>strategies<\/span><\/span>, and sustainability of the<\/span><\/span>unit\u2019s<\/span><\/span> <\/span>products, services, <\/span><\/span><\/span>and <\/span><\/span><\/span>practices. <\/span><\/span><\/span>T<\/span><\/span>eam should connect and t<\/span><\/span>alk to the<\/span><\/span> <\/span>leaders and stakeholders<\/span><\/span> <\/span>of the <\/span><\/span><\/span>unit. Using concepts, and practices examined in this course come up with your r<\/span><\/span>ecommend<\/span><\/span>ations<\/span><\/span> <\/span>to make the unit <\/span><\/span><\/span>more <\/span><\/span><\/span>sustainable<\/span><\/span> <\/span>over the next 1<\/span><\/span>-year <\/span><\/span><\/span>and 3<\/span><\/span>–<\/span><\/span>year period<\/span><\/span>s<\/span><\/span>. Suggest resources and implementation plans.  Write a report summarizing your findings and recommendations<\/span><\/span> <\/span>in no more than 15 pages.<\/span><\/span> <\/span>There <\/span><\/span><\/span>are<\/span><\/span> <\/span>no format requirements, but write in a way that would appeal to the unit heads, and <\/span><\/span><\/span>help <\/span><\/span><\/span>persuade them to act on your recommendations. <\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

This is a <\/span><\/span><\/span>fast paced<\/span><\/span> <\/span>group activity so there is little time to waste.
