that are of relevance to your research topic and to develop an appropriate theoretical
\nframework. Moreover, you should identify the key insights and open questions regarding
\nyour chosen topic that emerge from your review of the literature.
The purpose of the CLR is to set your ideas and your research against the background
\nof previous published work in the area. That is to say, it is a critical review of the
\nliterature that makes up the wider context, within which your \u2018narrow\u2019 piece of
\n<\/span>research is situated.<\/span>
The CLR should synthesise literature around themes or hypothesis development and
\nshould lead to the development of themes for qualitative research and of hypotheses
\nfor quantitative research.
Note that the CLR is not <\/span>an annotated bibliography, but a critical review set in a
\ncoherent train of discussion. The purposes of the CLR include:<\/span>
to indicate the key academic theories within your chosen area; to demonstrate
\nthat your knowledge of your chosen area is up-to-date; to show how your
\nresearch relates to previous published research; to assess the strengths and
\nweaknesses of previous work including omissions or \u2018bias\u2019 and take these into
\n<\/span>account in your arguments; to justify your arguments by referencing previous
\nresearch;<\/span>
to enable (through clear referencing) those reading your dissertation to find
\nthe original work you cite.
