You can think of the abstract as a more formal way of covering some of the issues you addressed in the topic analysis. As this is a summary, I do not expect to see any direct quotes from your research &#8211; this should be an opportunity for you, the writer, to summarize your topic for me, the reader.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p style=\"margin: 12px 0px; cursor: auto; color: inherit;\">The Abstract will be a concise summary of your topic that<\/p>\n<ul style=\"margin-right: 0px; margin-bottom: 6px; margin-left: 25px; cursor: auto; color: inherit;\">\n<li style=\"cursor: auto; color: inherit;\">explains how your topic relates to writing\/literacy<\/li>\n<li style=\"cursor: auto; color: inherit;\">details where you plan on taking your topic, and<\/li>\n<li style=\"cursor: auto; color: inherit;\">includes your tentative thesis statement<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p style=\"margin: 12px 0px; cursor: auto; color: inherit;\">For examples, look at the two scholarly articles in Module 7\/8. The abstract for &#8220;Learning to be Literate&#8221; is a bit too brief for our needs, as it&#8217;s mostly key phrases, but it can give you an idea of the type of information typically included in an abstract. Lancaster&#8217;s abstract in &#8220;Do Academics Really Write This Way? This may be different from Annotated Bibs you\u2019ve done in the past, as we\u2019re going to focus more on vetting our sources instead of just providing a summary. It\u2019s important to think critically about where our sources come from, when they were written, and how they\u2019ll work for our project goals. Keep in mind that general web sources will not be acceptable for this project.<\/li>\n<li style=\"cursor: auto; color: inherit;\"><strong style=\"font-weight: bold; cursor: auto; color: inherit;\">Source Information<\/strong>: Identify the journal or publication the source was found in and explain why it\u2019s an acceptable and credible source for your research. Do some digging and find out a bit more information about the journal like academic affiliation, focus, etc.<\/li>\n<li style=\"cursor: auto; color: inherit;\"><strong style=\"font-weight: bold; cursor: auto; color: inherit;\">Date<\/strong>: Identify the publication date for the article, and discuss the relevance the publication date has on the information provided in the source. It\u2019s best to keep sources current, especially on this type of project. If it\u2019s an older article (10+ years), explain why this would still be a helpful source for your project.<\/li>\n<li style=\"cursor: auto; color: inherit;\"><strong style=\"font-weight: bold; cursor: auto; color: inherit;\">Summary and Purpose<\/strong>: Provide a summary of the source, focusing on explaining the author\u2019s main point. Do not use any direct quotes in your summary \u2013 follow the guidelines for creating effective summaries in<span style=\"cursor: auto; color: inherit;\">&nbsp;<\/span><em style=\"cursor: auto; color: inherit;\">They Say\/I Say<span style=\"cursor: auto; color: inherit;\">&nbsp;<\/span><\/em>(ch. 2).
