Global Governance Project (project proposal 5% + presentation of the policy-brief 5% + analysis<\/span>

In this signature assignment, students will choose one specific problem or issue of security that the<\/span>
international system faces, evaluate the existing efforts of the international society in solving this<\/span>
transnational challenge, and design a feasible action plan for diplomacy to tackle it through global<\/span>
governance. You are expected to<\/span> <\/span>construct<\/span> <\/span>and<\/span> <\/span>defend<\/span> <\/span>your own positions and<\/span> <\/span>design the solution<\/span> <\/span>to<\/span>
the issue of international security you select<\/span> <\/span>from the point of view of a policy analyst who holds a<\/span>
position in an intergovernmental organization (IGO) or non-governmental organization (NGO)<\/span>.<\/span>
This gives you freedom to adapt your work and angle of approach to distinctive policy-making contexts.<\/span>
This Global Governance Project consists of the following three steps:<\/span>
1.<\/span> <\/span>Submit your project proposal<\/span> <\/span>by March 23<\/span>: Each student is required to submit a 3\u20135-page proposal<\/span>
to Canvas. Your proposal should convey that you have done initial research and know what you are<\/span>
going to write about in the final analysis paper. Since you are expected to propose a solution to a<\/span>
particularly global governance problem of your choosing, your proposal should briefly explain the<\/span>
problem that you will be tackling. Do not just tell me war, AIDS, environment, economic<\/span>
inequality, etc. is an issue\u2014you need to get more specific, by narrowing down to what forms of war,<\/span>
economic or political inequality, ozone depletion, etc. Your topic selection, which can be informed<\/span>
by the case study in the discussion forum assignment. Please note that<\/span> <\/span>you cannot continue to the<\/span>
next step of the project without my approval of the proposal.<\/span>
2.<\/span> <\/span>Compose your analysis paper (8-10 pages in length, including bibliography): As a policy analyst,<\/span>
you are expected to:<\/span>
a.<\/span> <\/span>Briefly describe the background and current situation of selected topic (event or issue) of<\/span>
international security.<\/span>
b.<\/span> <\/span>Identify divergent perspectives about the selected topic and provide your evaluation of these<\/span>
perspectives.<\/span>
c.<\/span> <\/span>Articulate your own informed positions, i.e., your evaluation of the success or failure of the<\/span>
diplomatic efforts in global governance in solving this problem.<\/span>
d.<\/span> <\/span>Suggest solutions\/policies and justify your project design (i.e., your proposed action plan).<\/span>
e.<\/span> <\/span>Address the counterarguments that can challenge your positions and suggested solutions.<\/span>
3.<\/span> <\/span>Present a 10-minute<\/span> <\/span>in-class policy brief<\/span> <\/span>of your project in class. You will sign up for a date for<\/span>
your presentation in Canvas and are required to submit your PowerPoint prior to your presentation.<\/span>
At the beginning of your presentation, you shall briefly describe the background of the event and the<\/span>
perspectives that have been used to explain the topic. Note that<\/span> <\/span>the majority of your presentation<\/span>
should be devoted to your own research briefing about the global issue and what you believe<\/span>
would be the best policy response in global governance with respect to the challenge under<\/span>
discussion<\/span>.<\/span>
Class colleagues are encouraged to interact with the presenter by offering their own opinions or<\/span>
raising questions on the author\u2019s positions and suggested policies delivered in the presentation. The<\/span>
input and feedback from the audience, which will be graded as part of class participation grade, will<\/span>
also help the presenter revise the analysis paper.<\/span>
You should submit the Word document (or PDF) of your project proposal and the final analysis paper,<\/span>
as well as your PowerPoint presentation in Canvas content area \u201cAssignment\u201d (under the headlines<\/span>
