America\u2019s Cold War Crusade in Vietnam, 1945-1968<\/span>
As part of your grade, you are required to write a<\/span> <\/span>BOOK REVIEW<\/span>. A review must comprise<\/span> <\/span>6<\/span>
to 8 pages of your writing.<\/span> <\/span>The Review is an essential component of your overall course grade.<\/span>
It will be next to impossible to achieve a passing grade without the submission of this<\/span>
assignment. Below I have included a guideline for the proper writing of a review. The review<\/span>
must be typed, font 12, and double-spaced. You must paginate your work.<\/span> <\/span>I WILL NOT<\/span> <\/span>accept<\/span>
a<\/span> <\/span>HANDWRITTEN<\/span> <\/span>review. Failure on your part to comply with the said guidelines will result<\/span>
in a low grade.<\/span>
How to Write a Critical Book Review:<\/span>
Your review should have two goals: first, to inform the reader about the content of the book, and<\/span>
second, to provide an evaluation that gives your judgment of the book\u2019s quality. Your<\/span>
introduction should include an overview of the gist of the author\u2019s argument. In essence, this is<\/span>
the equivalent to a thesis statement.<\/span>
Do not merely summarize events. The summary should be limited and consist of a discussion<\/span>
and highlights of the major arguments, themes, ideas, and characteristics of the book. While you<\/span>
may use direct quotes from the book (make sure you always give the page number), such quotes<\/span>
should never be the bulk of the summary. Much of your grade will depend on how well you<\/span>
describe and explain the material<\/span> <\/span>IN YOUR OWN WORDS<\/span>. You might want to take the major<\/span>
organizing themes of the book and use them to organize your own discussion. This does NOT<\/span>
mean, however, that I want a chapter-by-chapter summary. Your goal is a unified essay.<\/span>
To evaluate a book, consider whether the interpretation and\/or conclusions of the author<\/span>
make sense. What evidence does the author present in putting forth his or her argument?<\/span>
And is the evidence adequate? Does the author ignore evidence or present evidence that<\/span>
contradicts his or her own interpretation? Is there an explanation that fits the evidence<\/span>
better than the author\u2019s? Is the author organized and clear in presentation? It is not<\/span>
acceptable to simply write that you agree with everything the author says. If you do agree,<\/span>
you must give reasons as to your assent.<\/span>
Here are a number of questions that you can address as part of your critique. Do not answer these<\/span>
questions one after another. Don\u2019t have one paragraph that answers one, and then the next<\/span>
paragraph that answers the next, etc. The answers should be part of a carefully constructed essay,<\/span>
complete with topic sentences and transitions.<\/span><\/p>\n

\uf0b7<\/span> <\/span>Preface or Introduction – Provides important information about the author’s intentions or<\/span>
the scope of the book. Can you identify any limitations? Has the author ignored important<\/span>
aspects of the subject?<\/span>
\uf0b7<\/span> <\/span>Table of Contents – Shows how the book’s organized — main ideas, how they’re<\/span>
developed (chronologically, topically, etc.)<\/span>
Points to ponder as you read the<\/span> <\/span>entire book:<\/span>
\uf0b7<\/span> <\/span>From what point of view is the book written?<\/span>
\uf0b7<\/span> <\/span>Do you agree or disagree with the author’s point of view?<\/span>
\uf0b7<\/span> <\/span>Make notes as you read, passages to quote in your review.<\/span>
\uf0b7<\/span> <\/span>Can you follow the author’s thesis, “common thread”?<\/span>
\uf0b7<\/span> <\/span>Are concepts well defined? Is the language clear and convincing? Are the ideas<\/span>
developed? What areas are covered and which areas are not? How accurate is the<\/span>
information?<\/span>
\uf0b7<\/span> <\/span>Is the author’s concluding chapter, the summary, convincing?<\/span>
\uf0b7<\/span> <\/span>If there are footnotes, do they provide important information? Do they clarify or extend<\/span>
points made in the text?<\/span>
\uf0b7<\/span> <\/span>If relevant, make note of the book’s format – layout, binding, etc. Are there maps,<\/span>
illustrations? Are they helpful?<\/span>
\uf0b7<\/span> <\/span>Is the index accurate? What sources did the author use — primary, secondary? Make note<\/span>
of important omissions.<\/span>
