color: inherit;\">Concentrated Animal<br \/>\nFeeding Operations (CAFOs). <span style=\"cursor: auto; color: inherit;\">I want to pursue research<br \/>\ninto CAFOs and their impact on the environment with the intent of widespread<br \/>\ndistribution of the findings at the end of the study, not just published and<br \/>\nforgotten. It does not appear that the negative effects of KAFOs are widely<br \/>\nknown. If the average person knows of the impact, it has the potential to<br \/>\ninfluence people to buy locally which encourages small farming and<br \/>\nsignificantly reduces the environmental impact. <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"cursor: auto; color: inherit;\"><span style=\"cursor: auto; color: inherit;\">I Grew up on a farm in<br \/>\nIndiana for a portion of my life. We had a small sheep and hay farm. I remember<br \/>\nwhen the concept of CAFOs came to our area, there was a meeting at the local<br \/>\narmory where a group of activists from North Carolina came to talk to the farmers<br \/>\nabout not investing in CAFOs. They educated the attendees about the negative<br \/>\nenvironmental impact on their community, the lack of regulations at the time,<br \/>\nand the poisoning of their local water sources from the chemical runoff from<br \/>\nthe CAFOs. My family chose to keep our small sheep farm, others chose to invest<br \/>\nin CAFOs. The closest CAFO to our farm was less than a mile away. <\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"cursor: auto; color: inherit;\"><span style=\"cursor: auto; color: inherit;\">The first thing we<br \/>\nnoticed once the CAFO was operational was the drop in water pressure, all the<br \/>\nfarms ran off of well water and everyone noticed the drop. The next thing to<br \/>\nchange was the smell of the water, it smelled like methane and the sulfur<br \/>\ncontent became significantly stronger. Most days we were not affected by the<br \/>\nsmell of swine manure, but when the wind changed the smell was intense,<br \/>\nnostril-burning, and disgustingly sweet. The days they sprayed the manure on<br \/>\nthe fields the air was thick with the stench. We chose those days to run<br \/>\nerrands in town all day because the smell was so strong it would permeate the<br \/>\nhouses in the area.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"cursor: auto; color: inherit;\"><span style=\"cursor: auto; color: inherit;\">A CAFO is defined by the U.S<br \/>\nDepartment of Agriculture as a small area of land that houses livestock and controls<br \/>\nthe dissolution of feces and dead animals. Maintains feed on the property and<br \/>\nall operations are performed on the property. The \u201chousing\u201d is categorized as a<br \/>\nconfined space for a minimum of 1,000 animal units to live in for at least 45<br \/>\ndays. Livestock are considered \u201canimal units\u201d, each unit is a total of 1,000<br \/>\npounds of live animal flesh. Examples of this are: 1,000 meat units equals<br \/>\n10,000 sheep, 55,000 turkeys, or 125,000 chickens. Food is provided and there<br \/>\nis no access to grazing <span style=\"cursor: auto; color: inherit;\">(DANIELS)<\/span>.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"cursor: auto; color: inherit;\"><span style=\"cursor: auto; color: inherit;\">CAFOs offer easy access to meat and<br \/>\nanimal byproducts, allowing for more production, more animals, less work, less<br \/>\ntime, less effort, and a massive environmental impact. <span style=\"cursor: auto; color: inherit;\">Some<br \/>\nmay argue the benefits of CAFOs allow for faster production at a higher volume,<br \/>\nthey allow for multiple varieties of livestock to be grown, in turn, minimizing<br \/>\nthe amount of land needed for pasture-fed animals as well as poultry and swine.<br \/>\nWhat effects are the CAFOs having on our environment and what are their<br \/>\ncontributions to air pollution? <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"cursor: auto; color: inherit;\"><span style=\"cursor: auto; color: inherit;\">I feel the findings<br \/>\nwill show that the need for mass production of meat and animal by-products can<br \/>\nbe met without the use of CAFOs, therefore reducing their impact on the<br \/>\nenvironment, air pollution, overbreeding, and livestock waste.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"cursor: auto; color: inherit;\"><span style=\"cursor: auto; color: inherit;\"><span style=\"cursor: auto; color: inherit;\">&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"cursor: auto; color: inherit;\"><span style=\"cursor: auto; color: inherit;\">Bibliography<span style=\"cursor: auto; color: inherit;\"><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"cursor: auto; color: inherit;\"><span style=\"cursor: auto; color: inherit;\">During an air quality test<br \/>\nperformed at a swine CAFO in Dublin, North Carolina, the air quality came back<br \/>\nless than ideal with numerous <span style=\"cursor: auto; color: inherit;\">pathogens including,<br \/>\n\u201cCampylobacter jejuni, Salmonella enterica, and Staphylococcus aureus (sea,<br \/>\nseb, and sec sequences) <span style=\"cursor: auto; color: inherit;\">(King)<\/span>\u201d,<br \/>\nall can be transmitted to humans.<\/span><span style=\"cursor: auto; color: inherit;\"><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"cursor: auto; color: inherit;\"><span style=\"cursor: auto; color: inherit;\">The study discusses the long-term<br \/>\neffects of air pollution and its consequences in Dublin and surrounding<br \/>\ncounties of North Carolina and its residents. The team of authors; Lewis,<br \/>\nBrandon M. Battye, William H. Aneja, Viney p. Honghyok Kim, Bell. Michelle L.<br \/>\ndid a research study by capturing the air pollutants and studied gaseous<br \/>\nammonia (NH3) and hydrogen sulfide (H2S) findings.
