Do NOT write a \u201creview\u201d of the artist or include comments concerning your subjective tastes (i.e., \u201cI think her work is fabulous\u201d) and do not include subjective statements garnered from other sources (i.e., \u201cthe father of sound installation\u201d or \u201cthe greatest singer of the century\u201d). Stay as objective as possible in order to \u201cteach the class\u201d about the artist\u2019s work. Stick to the facts.<\/font><\/p>\n<\/h2>\n<h2 style=\"cursor: auto; color: inherit;\"><strong style=\"cursor: auto;\">REQUIRED CONTENT<\/strong><\/h2>\n<h2 style=\"cursor: auto; color: inherit;\">\n<p style=\"cursor: auto;\"><font size=\"2\">One or two paragraphs about the artist\u2019s background as it relates to their work.<\/font><\/p>\n<ul style=\"cursor: auto;\">\n<li style=\"cursor: auto;\"><font size=\"2\">This background information should be at least 150 words and but no more than 250 words.<\/font><\/li>\n<li style=\"cursor: auto;\"><font size=\"2\">It should contain information about their early development as an artist. This paragraph should cover the artist\u2019s background BEFORE her\/his\/their creation of the works you plan to discuss in your Research Paper. You may NOT discuss the works you plan to discuss in your Research Paper in this paragraph.<\/font><\/li>\n<li style=\"cursor: auto;\"><font size=\"2\">If available, you should include their date of birth, where they were born, the name of each college they attended, the degrees they received and when they graduated for each degree.<\/font><\/li>\n<li style=\"cursor: auto;\"><font size=\"2\">It should include information about their childhood or adolescence as pertains to their development as a sound artist and\/or as an artist (i.e., Did they study music? Did they study art? Were they fascinated by a certain sound as a child? Did they study or have interest in something that later became part of their work? Did their parent&#8217;s profession affect their life or art career in some way? Did they change artistic interest at some point or change majors in college? etc.).<\/font><\/li>\n<li style=\"cursor: auto;\"><font size=\"2\">Almost all &#8220;sound artists&#8221; start out as musicians, visual artists or something else before getting into &#8220;sound sculpture&#8221; and\/or &#8220;sound installation.&#8221; When did this artist start making sound installation and\/or sound sculpture? What caused this change of focus?<\/font><\/li>\n<li style=\"cursor: auto;\"><font size=\"2\">All information must appear in chronological order (for example, first say when they were born, then talk about their childhood, then give their college information, etc.)<\/font><\/li>\n<li style=\"cursor: auto;\"><font size=\"2\">Do NOT include lists of awards, lists of performances, lists of exhibits, entire discography, etc<\/font><\/li>\n<li style=\"cursor: auto;\"><font size=\"2\">Do NOT copy or paraphrase their artist philosophy statement. I want hard facts, not philosophies.<\/font><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ol style=\"cursor: auto;\">\n<li style=\"cursor: auto;\"><font size=\"2\">Extensive description of the TWO sound installation or sound sculpture pieces by that artist that have been assigned to you. You should write at least two full paragraphs about each piece you describe. Include:<\/font><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<ul style=\"cursor: auto;\">\n<li style=\"cursor: auto;\"><font size=\"2\">the purpose\/intent of the work.<\/font><\/li>\n<li style=\"cursor: auto;\"><font size=\"2\">the materials used.<\/font><\/li>\n<li style=\"cursor: auto;\"><font size=\"2\">description of both sound and visual elements. How does it look? How does it sound? How are the two connected?<\/font><\/li>\n<li style=\"cursor: auto;\"><font size=\"2\">what happens in the piece. You must do RESEARCH and provide HARD FACTS about the piece for your description. If you simply recount what you saw or heard on a video without in-depth explanation, I will deduct substantial points.<\/font><\/li>\n<li style=\"cursor: auto;\"><font size=\"2\">where and when each piece was first shown. If you are describing a particular showing of the work after its first debut, include the location and date of that exhibition, but do NOT include a list of all exhibitions of the work.<\/font><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p style=\"cursor: auto;\"><font size=\"2\">Your paper MUST also completely answer these 3 questions concerning EACH of the works you discuss in your paper:<\/font><\/p>\n<ol style=\"cursor: auto;\">\n<li style=\"cursor: auto;\"><font size=\"2\">Does this artist use sound technology in the works you are discussing (i.e., speakers, microphones, sound editing programs, etc.)? If so, what is the exact sound technology used and how is it used in the piece?<\/font><\/li>\n<li style=\"cursor: auto;\"><font size=\"2\">What disciplines (i.e., science, philosophy, dance, theater, visual art, video, etc.) other than music\/sound are incorporated into these works? How does this connect to the sound?<\/font><\/li>\n<li style=\"cursor: auto;\"><font size=\"2\">Do the pieces you are discussing use acoustic space and\/or speakers? If so, how? (If using speakers, how many speakers are used?)<\/font><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<\/h2>\n<h2 style=\"cursor: auto; color: inherit;\">FOOTNOTE<\/h2>\n<h2 style=\"cursor: auto; color: inherit;\">\n<p style=\"cursor: auto;\"><font size=\"2\">Everything in this paper must come from a source other than yourself, so EVERYTHING must have a footnote citation. After every chunk of information, you should insert a footnote number. The numbers should be in sequential order in the body of your paper (i.e., 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, etc.). This number will match the footnote number that has the information about that source.<\/font><\/p>\n<p style=\"cursor: auto;\"><font size=\"2\">You MUST use Google Docs to write this paper. It&#8217;s easy to make footnotes with Google Docs.<\/font><\/p>\n<p style=\"cursor: auto;\"><font size=\"2\">If a resource is repeated, you should give that passage a new footnote number, but you don\u2019t have to repeat all the source information.<\/font><\/p>\n<p style=\"cursor: auto;\"><font size=\"2\">If you are citing a book or article for the second time, you must include the page number you are citing, EVEN IF IT IS THE SAME PAGE AS BEFORE.<\/font><\/p>\n<p style=\"cursor: auto;\"><font size=\"2\">If you accessed the information via a website, you MUST the include URL for that EXACT webpage, NOT the general website. If in a new citation you use a different page from a website you have already cited, you must give the new URL in the citation.<\/font><\/p>\n<p style=\"cursor: auto;\"><font size=\"2\">For all video and audio sources, you MUST include the timestamp of where your source material begins on the video.<\/font><\/p>\n<\/h2>\n<h2 style=\"cursor: auto; color: inherit;\"><font size=\"5\"><br \/><\/font><\/h2>\n<h2 style=\"cursor: auto; color: inherit;\"><font size=\"5\">Bibliography<\/font><\/h2>\n<h2 style=\"cursor: auto; color: inherit;\">\n<p style=\"cursor: auto;\"><font size=\"2\">ALSO include a bibliography page at the end of the paper. Formatting for Footnotes and Bibliography<\/font><\/p>\n<p style=\"cursor: auto;\"><font size=\"2\">The footnotes and bibliography should be in Chicago Manual of Style \u201cNotes and Bibliography\u201d (NB) style.<\/font><\/p>\n<p style=\"cursor: auto;\"><font size=\"2\">In addition to the Chicago Manual of Style guidelines, also follow my special rules:<\/font><\/p>\n<ul style=\"cursor: auto;\">\n<li style=\"cursor: auto;\"><font size=\"2\">NEVER use direct quotes in a paper you write for my class. Put all information into your own words. I will deduct one point per word for direct quotes. &#8212; ALWAYS include the url for internet sources. In the footnote, list the url of the EXACT page that you used, not for the general website. On the bibliography page, list the general website, with the exact pages you referenced listed underneath. &#8212; See my paper formatting rules next, which differ somewhat from Chicago Manual of Style formatting.<\/font><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/h2>\n<h2 style=\"cursor: auto; color: inherit;\">REQUIRED FORMAT FOR PAPER<\/h2>\n<h2 style=\"cursor: auto; color: inherit;\">\n<ul style=\"cursor: auto;\">\n<li style=\"cursor: auto;\"><font size=\"2\">Include only your name and the title of the paper (the name of your artist) on the first two lines at the top of the first page. You should NOT use more than two lines for the introductory information. You do not need to include a title page. (This is not CMS format, this is my format.)<\/font><\/li>\n<li style=\"cursor: auto;\"><font size=\"2\">Typeface must be Times New Roman, 12 Point.<\/font><\/li>\n<li style=\"cursor: auto;\"><font size=\"2\">Margins should be 1 inch on top, bottom, left and right. (It doesn&#8217;t matter if you use larger margins to make your paper seem longer. I&#8217;m doing a word count and this won&#8217;t have any effect.)<\/font><\/li>\n<li style=\"cursor: auto;\"><font size=\"2\">Use double-spacing.<\/font><\/li>\n<li style=\"cursor: auto;\"><font size=\"2\">Do not insert extra space between paragraphs.<\/font><\/li>\n<li style=\"cursor: auto;\"><font size=\"2\">Indent at the beginning of each paragraph.<\/font><\/li>\n<li style=\"cursor: auto;\"><font size=\"2\">Papers should be at least 650 words long (NOT INCLUDING FOOTNOTES AND BIBLIOGRAPHY PAGES).<\/font><\/li>\n<li style=\"cursor: auto;\"><font size=\"2\">Please do not exceed 1000 words. Edit your paper if you have more than that.<\/font><\/li>\n<li style=\"cursor: auto;\"><font size=\"2\">Please use a spelling and grammar check on your paper.
