line-height: normal; cursor: auto; color: inherit;\">Military<br \/>\nhostilities between colonists and the British began at Lexington and Concord in<br \/>\n1775.<span style=\"cursor: auto; color: inherit;\">&nbsp; <\/span>Representatives of the thirteen<br \/>\ncolonists meeting in Philadelphia signed on July 4, 1776 the Declaration of<br \/>\nIndependence that proclaimed the colonies\u2019 separation from Britain.<span style=\"cursor: auto; color: inherit;\">&nbsp; <\/span>Britain was not about to let an important<br \/>\npart of its Empire break away, and the conflict continued until a peace treaty<br \/>\ngranting independence was signed in Paris in September of 1783.<\/p>\n<p style=\"margin-bottom: 0in; line-height: normal; cursor: auto; color: inherit;\">Not all<br \/>\ncolonists thought breaking away from Britain was a good idea.<span style=\"cursor: auto; color: inherit;\">&nbsp; <\/span>Those favoring independence referred to<br \/>\nthemselves with many labels.<span style=\"cursor: auto; color: inherit;\">&nbsp; <\/span>Taylor<br \/>\nusually uses the word \u201cPatriots\u201d to refer to colonists who wanted to break away<br \/>\nfrom Britain, but he also sometimes refers to them by other terms used at the<br \/>\ntime, like \u201crebels\u201d or \u201cWhigs\u201d.<span style=\"cursor: auto; color: inherit;\">&nbsp; <\/span>Those<br \/>\ncolonists who opposed separation from Britain were called \u201cLoyalists,\u201d and<br \/>\nsometimes \u201cTories\u201d.<span style=\"cursor: auto; color: inherit;\">&nbsp; <\/span>There were also many<br \/>\ncolonists who had not made up their mind on the issue.<span style=\"cursor: auto; color: inherit;\">&nbsp; <\/span>They were not sure whether the colonies<br \/>\nshould break away from the British Empire or remain within it.<span style=\"cursor: auto; color: inherit;\">&nbsp; <\/span>These Taylor refers to as the \u201cdisaffected\u201d<br \/>\nor the \u201cundecided\u201d.<span style=\"cursor: auto; color: inherit;\">&nbsp; <\/span>You should pay<br \/>\nattention to the numbers Taylor provides, of the proportions of colonists in<br \/>\neach group, <i style=\"cursor: auto; color: inherit;\">and mention them in your essay<\/i>.<span style=\"cursor: auto; color: inherit;\">&nbsp; <\/span>This was not a battle between \u201cthe Americans\u201d<br \/>\nand \u201cthe British\u201d, but rather between rebels and those who wanted the colonies<br \/>\nto remain in the Empire.<span style=\"cursor: auto; color: inherit;\">&nbsp; <\/span>The latter<br \/>\nincluded many colonists and, of course, the British government.<span style=\"cursor: auto; color: inherit;\">&nbsp; <\/span>The struggle was also a contest to get the<br \/>\nundecided to come around to whatever side you happened to favor.<span style=\"cursor: auto; color: inherit;\">&nbsp; <\/span><i style=\"cursor: auto; color: inherit;\">How did colonists on various sides of the<br \/>\nissue, of whether rebellion was the right decision, treat each other?<\/i><\/p>\n<p style=\"margin-bottom: 0in; color: inherit;\">&nbsp; <\/span>In what ways did European powers eventually<br \/>\nend up aiding the Patriot cause in the early years of the conflict?<span style=\"cursor: auto; color: inherit;\">&nbsp; <\/span>What severe difficulties did Washington\u2019s<br \/>\nsoldiers face?<span style=\"cursor: auto; color: inherit;\">&nbsp; <\/span>What military blunders<br \/>\ndid the British commit, especially in terms of where they deployed their troops<br \/>\nand how they moved them around?<span style=\"cursor: auto;
