Military
\nhostilities between colonists and the British began at Lexington and Concord in
\n1775.  <\/span>Representatives of the thirteen
\ncolonists meeting in Philadelphia signed on July 4, 1776 the Declaration of
\nIndependence that proclaimed the colonies\u2019 separation from Britain.  <\/span>Britain was not about to let an important
\npart of its Empire break away, and the conflict continued until a peace treaty
\ngranting independence was signed in Paris in September of 1783.<\/p>\n

Not all
\ncolonists thought breaking away from Britain was a good idea.  <\/span>Those favoring independence referred to
\nthemselves with many labels.  <\/span>Taylor
\nusually uses the word \u201cPatriots\u201d to refer to colonists who wanted to break away
\nfrom Britain, but he also sometimes refers to them by other terms used at the
\ntime, like \u201crebels\u201d or \u201cWhigs\u201d.  <\/span>Those
\ncolonists who opposed separation from Britain were called \u201cLoyalists,\u201d and
\nsometimes \u201cTories\u201d.  <\/span>There were also many
\ncolonists who had not made up their mind on the issue.  <\/span>They were not sure whether the colonies
\nshould break away from the British Empire or remain within it.  <\/span>These Taylor refers to as the \u201cdisaffected\u201d
\nor the \u201cundecided\u201d.  <\/span>You should pay
\nattention to the numbers Taylor provides, of the proportions of colonists in
\neach group, and mention them in your essay<\/i>.  <\/span>This was not a battle between \u201cthe Americans\u201d
\nand \u201cthe British\u201d, but rather between rebels and those who wanted the colonies
\nto remain in the Empire.  <\/span>The latter
\nincluded many colonists and, of course, the British government.  <\/span>The struggle was also a contest to get the
\nundecided to come around to whatever side you happened to favor.  <\/span>How did colonists on various sides of the
\nissue, of whether rebellion was the right decision, treat each other?<\/i><\/p>\n

Some issues to
\nkeep in mind that your essay should address: 
\n<\/span>What reservations did European powers have towards allying with the
\nPatriots and what reservations did the Patriots have towards allying with them?  <\/span>In what ways did European powers eventually
\nend up aiding the Patriot cause in the early years of the conflict?  <\/span>What severe difficulties did Washington\u2019s
\nsoldiers face?  <\/span>What military blunders
\ndid the British commit, especially in terms of where they deployed their troops
\nand how they moved them around?  <\/span>What
\nimportant roles did women play in the conflict, and how did men react to their
\nefforts?  <\/span>What degree of success or
\nfailure did the British have trying to use to their advantage slaves and
\nIndians?<\/i><\/p>\n
