Mrs R is a 93-year-old lady who is a visually impaired due to a macular degeneration\/ glaucoma. <\/span>She is a very social person but due to her <\/span>vision loss, she Mrs R is feeling lonely and isolated in the aged residential care.<\/span> Mrs is not allowed to go out by herself for a walk and she is not happy <\/span>about it <\/span>as she loves walking.<\/span> She would love to go out and do some activities<\/span><\/span> <\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n

Mrs <\/span>stated<\/span> that she would love to have someone to talk to or do an <\/span>activity<\/span> for blind as limited activities for visually impaired are available in her residential <\/span>aged care home. <\/span><\/span> <\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n

To carry out changes I had to engage with a clinical manager to propose the quality improvement project idea and have it approved. Once approved I started to <\/span>gathering<\/span> the information about <\/span>avaibility<\/span> of mental <\/span>or <\/span> <\/span>socia<\/span>l<\/span> support and activities for visually impaired. I found a support <\/span><\/span>https:\/\/blindlowvision.org.nz\/our-services\/emotional-support\/<\/span><\/span><\/a>. <\/span><\/span> <\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n

I found out that they provide a <\/span>Telefriend<\/span> peer support<\/span> which could be a great mental support for my resident<\/span>. I ha<\/span>ve introduced my idea to <\/span>her, and she was so excited about <\/span>it<\/span> and we decided to go ahead with it. Only issue we had that she would have to call them. Mrs R ha<\/span>s an old landline with big touch buttons. <\/span>So<\/span> I had to <\/span>come up with<\/span> idea how she going to dial the number. Her <\/span>daughter<\/span> did not have a <\/span>manual to her landline so I had to <\/span>google,<\/span> and I found out that I could save a number in the memory. I have managed to save it in the memory and placed a bi<\/span>t <\/span>eva<\/span> sticker with T <\/span>letter <\/span>on the <\/span>push button, so Mrs R will be able to call <\/span>telefriend<\/span> just by pressing T button<\/span>. We have practised a few times where to find a letter on her phone. Later Mrs R was able to dial <\/span>byherself<\/span> and managed to <\/span>speak with telefriend<\/span>. Mrs R was so pleased and thanked me a lot as from now on she will be able to talk to someone with <\/span>similar<\/span> issues who understands her. <\/span><\/span> <\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n

With resident approval I have registered her in Low blind vision NZ<\/span>, <\/span><\/span>https:\/\/blindlowvision.org.nz\/our-services\/sport-and-leisure\/<\/span><\/span><\/a> so she would be able to attend activities especially for the visually impaired and could <\/span>possible<\/span> make a <\/span>new f<\/span>riendships<\/span>. Mrs R was contacted from Low vision <\/span>blind <\/span>NZ<\/span> and they offered her <\/span>upcomming<\/span> l<\/span><\/span>eisure exploration and community events.<\/span> Mrs was able to attend one event during my stay in aged residential care<\/span><\/span> <\/span><\/p>\n
