Serious crime and social disorder is commonly caused by&nbsp;<strong style=\"cursor: auto;\">Psychoses,&nbsp;<\/strong>serious disorders that leave individuals out of touch with reality.&nbsp;&nbsp;<strong style=\"cursor: auto;\">Mood disorders<\/strong><span style=\"cursor: auto;\">&nbsp;<\/span>such as depression, bipolar affective,&nbsp;post-partum depression may often lead to reckless type crimes.&nbsp;<span style=\"cursor: auto;\">&nbsp;<\/span><strong style=\"cursor: auto;\">Personality disorders<\/strong><span style=\"cursor: auto;\">&nbsp;<\/span>like that of antisocial personalities,&nbsp;psychopathy, sociopathy, narcissism might explain an entire range of minor to major criminal activities.&nbsp;<span style=\"cursor: auto;\">&nbsp;<\/span><strong style=\"cursor: auto;\">Anxiety disorders<\/strong><span style=\"cursor: auto;\">&nbsp;<\/span>like that of post-traumatic stress disorder, social anxiety, general anxiety, and&nbsp;various phobias can lead to criminal choices.&nbsp; and Structure Theories<\/font><\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"cursor: auto;\"><font size=\"3\">Social pathology and social structure theories view society as if it were an organism.&nbsp; That is society is made of cells, that make up various systems, that all provide various&nbsp;functions required for the health and survival of the society.&nbsp; &nbsp;That is, society as a whole sets up the rewards system&#8211; what rewards are available and what persons are required to do to get them.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;For example, in the U.S. today one must have money to have typical (relative to the society) quality of life resources.&nbsp; In order to have money, one must be employed or engage in entrepreneurship.&nbsp; In order to get employed or resources to go into business, academic degrees are typically required.&nbsp; But what happens if an individual does not have the mental, psychological, or financial capacity or opportunity to finish high school or higher degree?&nbsp; According to Merton, this results in<span style=\"cursor: auto;\">&nbsp;<\/span><strong style=\"cursor: auto;\">strain<span style=\"cursor: auto;\">&nbsp;<\/span><\/strong>by which the individual has 5 main adaptations to such dysjunction between the goals and means that society has set up for the individuals:<\/font><\/p>\n<p style=\"cursor: auto;\"><font size=\"3\"><strong style=\"cursor: auto;\">Conformity<span style=\"cursor: auto;\">&nbsp;<\/span><\/strong>is when the individual continues to strive for an education in order to become gainfully employed to earn money.&nbsp; Embrace both the goal and means of society.<\/font><\/p>\n<p style=\"cursor: auto;\"><font size=\"3\">or<\/font><\/p>\n<p style=\"cursor: auto;\"><font size=\"3\"><strong style=\"cursor: auto;\">Innovation<span style=\"cursor: auto;\">&nbsp;<\/span><\/strong>is when the individual chooses non conventional means such as creating a fake diploma to get a job, selling illegal narcotics, engaging in prostitution, or other unaccepted means of employment and entrepreneurship.&nbsp; &#8211;Continue to pursue the goal of earning money but choosing unacceptable means.<\/font><\/p>\n<p style=\"cursor: auto;\"><font size=\"3\">or<\/font><\/p>\n<p style=\"cursor: auto;\"><font size=\"3\"><strong style=\"cursor: auto;\">Ritualism<span style=\"cursor: auto;\">&nbsp;<\/span><\/strong>is when the individual chooses to continue efforts to find legal employment that will provide enough money but accepts that they will have to live in a tent and eat out of trash cans.&nbsp; &#8211;Continue to follow society&#8217;s prescribed means but no longer strive for society&#8217;s goals.<\/font><\/p>\n<p style=\"cursor: auto;\"><font size=\"3\">or<\/font><\/p>\n<p style=\"cursor: auto;\"><font size=\"3\"><strong style=\"cursor: auto;\">Retreatism<\/strong>&nbsp;is when the individual no longer seeks typical quality of life resources nor do they seek employment or money.&nbsp; &#8211;Ignore or reject both social goals and means.<\/font><\/p>\n<p style=\"cursor: auto;\"><font size=\"3\">or&nbsp;<\/font><\/p>\n<p style=\"cursor: auto;\"><font size=\"3\"><strong style=\"cursor: auto;\">Rebellion<\/strong>&nbsp;is when the individual chooses to no longer seek employment and money but something else like living in the woods, surviving off the land. &#8211;Possibly change society.&nbsp; Create&nbsp;unique or atypical goals and\/or unique or atypical means.<\/font><\/p>\n<p style=\"cursor: auto;\"><font size=\"3\">Merton also introduced the construct of<span style=\"cursor: auto;\">&nbsp;<\/span><strong style=\"cursor: auto;\">structural anomie<\/strong>&nbsp;in which he recognizes that societies and groups can emphasize disproportionately societal goals and means.&nbsp; For example, if a society stresses the means more than the goals, individuals may be more likely to choose ritualism.&nbsp; Where as in a society that stresses the goals more than the means will likely have individuals more likely choosing innovation.<\/font><\/p>\n<p style=\"margin-top: 0pt; This external containment involves all the opportunities for work, play, and exploration.&nbsp; For example, schools, athletics, parks, music are some of the non criminal activities most communities provide.&nbsp;&nbsp;<strong style=\"cursor: auto;\">Third<\/strong>, society has mechanisms to develop individual&#8217;s skills for appropriate activities.&nbsp; This<strong style=\"cursor: auto;\"><span style=\"cursor: auto;\">&nbsp;<\/span>individual efficacy<span style=\"cursor: auto;\">&nbsp;<\/span><\/strong>helps push individuals internally to non criminal activity.&nbsp;<span style=\"cursor: auto;\">&nbsp;<\/span><strong style=\"cursor: auto;\">Fourth<\/strong>, society has mechanisms to shape the<span style=\"cursor: auto;\">&nbsp;<\/span><strong style=\"cursor: auto;\">self-concept<\/strong>, the ideas and character&nbsp;that each individual has.&nbsp; Individuals can develop values in which they desire appropriate activities and find criminal behavior undesirable.&nbsp; Individuals learn to delay gratification, establish appropriate goals, and avoid obstacles.<\/font><\/p>\n<p style=\"cursor: auto;\"><font size=\"3\"><strong style=\"cursor: auto;\">Social Bond Theory<\/strong><span style=\"cursor: auto;\">&nbsp;<\/span>argues that the motivation to adhere to society&#8217;s and the community&#8217;s expectations of behavior is reflective of the extent to which the individual has bonded to the community.&nbsp; The theory focuses on four facets of social bond.&nbsp;<span style=\"cursor: auto;\">&nbsp;<\/span><strong style=\"cursor: auto;\">First<\/strong>,<span style=\"cursor: auto;\">&nbsp;<\/span><strong style=\"cursor: auto;\">attachment<span style=\"cursor: auto;\">&nbsp;<\/span><\/strong>is the importance of the relationships within the community.&nbsp; Just as individuals learn how and why and the value of brushing one&#8217;s teeth, individuals learn the how and why and value smoking marijuana.&nbsp; We learn through interaction with others.&nbsp; Our parents may teach a child that marijuana is bad and it is harmful.&nbsp; Friends may teach the same child that marijuana is good and not harmful.&nbsp;<span style=\"cursor: auto;\">&nbsp;<\/span><strong style=\"cursor: auto;\">Differential-Association theory<\/strong><span style=\"cursor: auto;\">&nbsp;<\/span>argues that individuals learn within the&nbsp;most significant relationships they have and the difference between interactions that support criminal activity and those interactions that reject criminal activity is what determines the likelihood of engaging in criminal activity.&nbsp;
