When food is genetically modified, its genes are changed by scientists to produce new traits that farmers and consumers want from their food. Most scientific organizations say that genetically modified foods are safe, but some people are concerned that the long-term effects are still unknown. People who think genetic modification may be unsafe say that genetically modifying the food supply could create new diseases, allergies, and toxins. Other people are concerned that a lack of regulation exposes people to genetically modified foods without their knowledge, minimizing the independence of the consumer.<\/span>
