The subject of this paper is the critical analysis of a filmmaker and one of their films. This paper should be no shorter than 5-7 full pages in length, written in a doublespaced, 12-pt font.<\/h2>\n

\n

-This paper must have a clear, critical thesis that is supported throughout the body of the paper.<\/strong><\/em>This thesis must have a strong articulation of a HOW idea, that is, a focus on a particular aspect of how the film was made that causally connects to WHY a particular way of critically understanding a film matters. This WHY idea could connect to some deeper reading of the film itself, to some pointed perspective on a historical or artistic moment, or perhaps to providing a new understanding of some cultural idea. Please be careful to avoid hyperbole, absolute statements and binary comparisons with other films.<\/p>\n

-Choose a filmmaker and film that qualify as working within the framework of our class subject matter.<\/strong><\/em> <\/span>For example, students may select someone we have or will discus in class, pick someone mentioned in the Sitney book but not covered in lecture, or perhaps an artist\/film that the student has found on their own. <\/span>Two artists that will be prohibited as subjects for this paper are Maya Deren and Salvador Dali<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

-One film should be chosen as a focus.<\/strong><\/em> <\/span>Please do not approach this paper as a filmography of the artist. <\/p>\n<\/h2>\n

The remaining bullet points should be thought of as material that will be distributed throughout the paper in service of the thesis.<\/em><\/h2>\n

-Discuss the filmmaker’s career, including background, colleagues and influence. <\/span><\/strong><\/em>Do this in the context of your thesis.<\/p>\n

-Provide an analysis of the film as a way to talk about the filmmaker’s style, interests and techniques.<\/strong><\/em> <\/span>Consider styles or artists whose work they may be reacting to or rejecting, and assert how such a relationship may be critically significant. Do this in the context of your thesis.<\/p>\n

-At least two ideas from Benjamin and\/or Greenberg, should be incorporated into the larger critical argument of the paper.<\/strong><\/em> <\/span>Use citations.
