We began our lessons in Christology by looking at Jesus the man (His humanity), and we searched diligently to see how He is described in both the OT and the NT (the names and titles of Jesus).
How do you determine if a man is a god? In this week’s lesson we will be looking closely at Jesus’ divinity, more specifically we will see this in the incarnation. We see writer’s accounts of what they saw Jesus do, and what He said in the gospels. It is appropriate that we are approaching the Easter season, since we will be examining the resurrection. Part of this discussion on Christology comes from a series of teachings from Dr. Aaron Friesen.

PART ONE:<\/strong>
#1.<\/strong> <\/span>In Handout #7 look and find how many different people witnessed the deity of Jesus in the New Testament. List who these people are.<\/em>

#2.<\/strong> <\/span>According to Handout #7 page 27, what is the most authoritative and primary witness to Jesus’ divinity?<\/em>

#3a.<\/strong> <\/span>What is the fundamental definition of the incarnation?<\/em>

#3b.<\/strong> <\/span>What is the Kenosis theory, and what Scripture is this theory based upon?<\/em>

#3c.<\/strong> <\/span>How does the handout describe what Jesus emptied of Himself?<\/em>

PART TWO:<\/strong>
Before the council of Nicaea in 325 AD, we see that the main issue about Jesus Christ was how we could define Jesus’ divinity in relation to the Father. After this council, the question arose in increasing magnitude and importance: since Jesus is both fully human and fully divine, then how do we understand these two natures in relation to each other? Some theories were proposed, and subsequently rejected along the way to what we call the Chalcedonian Council in 451 AD.<\/strong>

1st.<\/strong> <\/span>Read the section on unorthodox Christological formulations in our handout.<\/em>
2nd.<\/strong> <\/span>Then read the Chalcedonian Formulation.<\/em>
3rd:<\/strong> <\/span>Place yourself in the time of the Early Church. What would it have been like to travel to one of these councils? Why do you think pastors\/scholars\/leaders in the church sought to come and discern these things together from all over the Mediterranean? If we were able to speak with the people of the Church in this time period, do you think they would agree with the way we have examined and have recorded the church councils? Do you see evidence of the church today falling prey to the same unorthodox theories on Jesus Christ’s nature?<\/em>

Answer these questions in a post of 300 or more words by Thursday, and also respond to at least two or more student posts in a minimum of 200 words by Saturday.
