The approaches to reflect on include:<\/p>\n

1. Interactional approach: views supervision as a dynamic process in which the supervisor and worker influence each other through behavior and expressed emotions.  This approach promotes self-awareness of social workers and includes validation of feelings by the supervisor.<\/p>\n

2. Cognitive-behavioral approach: promotes self-awareness by challenging assumptions that may be harmful and encouraging more positive and adaptive interpretations (“thinking about your thinking” and “minding your mind”).<\/p>\n

3. Social-cognitive approach: seeks to strengthen self-efficacy beliefs through mentoring and ongoing professional development.  Includes supervisee learning through modeling and support.<\/p>\n

4. Experiential learning approach: includes sequentially moving through 4 phases: concrete experience, reflective observation, abstract conceptualization, and active experimentation.<\/p>\n

5. Group supervision approach: uses group dynamics to advance knowledge and skills of social workers by promoting connections and supports between group members and constructive peer feedback.<\/p>\n

6. Ecological orientation approach: reviews individual behavior and skills within the organizational environment and culture.<\/p>\n
