Writing Assessment: Final Essay — Using Cannabis to Save Our Forests . . . and Our Lives

We recently screened The True History of Marijuana (Chapter 4), Weed: A Special Investigation, Hempsters, and The Union — films that outline how a crop (industrial hemp), so vital to the founding of the United States as a country, has been demonized only to control the cultivation and distribution of a relative crop (marijuana). We have seen what alienating industrial hemp from the farmer has done to the oceans and the world’s waterways. We have seen how alienating (and demonizing) this crop actually works against the agricultural, plastics, fuel, and paper industries. Finally, we have witnessed the many functions of a safer plant, faster growing than trees and more sustainable than the fossil fuels currently used for petrochemicals.

And its controversial medicinal properties are amazing. A great deal of medical research proves the effectiveness of Cannabidiol in shrinking brain tumors and other cancers. We learned the government knew this as early as 1974, based on commissioned research. Its response was to shut down the study. Wow! Wonder what frightened them.
In your final essay, discuss some aspect of industrial hemp or medical marijuana which interests you. (After seeing the Pine Ridge Subdivision, I want a hemp house. The temperature inside would be regulated year round.)
Remember, you are incorporating expanded research. Find at least two articles that interest you. Find at least two videos with information you can use. This is a total of four sources minimum that must be included in your final essay.
If you feel uncomfortable writing about hemp, develop an essay on the forests and what can be done to save them so they maintain their greatest obligation to humanity: clean air to breathe.

– a one to one and one-half page bibliography;
– a five-to-seven paragraph well-developed essay based on the research presented in the bibliography; followed by a Works Cited page. (You may include graphics.)
