Write an analytical paper responding to one of the prompts below. Reading responses must incorporate three or more course readings and should not include material not covered in class. Each paper should be 5-6 double-spaced pages in length.
Exception: students may draw on the full text of the assigned reading. For example, we only read two chapters in Vivek Baldโs, Bengali Harlem, but you may read and draw on the entirety of the book to make your argument.
Prompts
- How have communities been shaped by the presence of overlapping diasporas? How did overlapping diasporas foster the development of interracial relationships? Why didnโt these relationships garner much attention from authorities?
- What are the origins of 20th century prohibitions on interracial intimacy? How have restrictions on interracial intimacies evolved over time? What do these restrictions and challenges to such restrictions reveal about the nature of race and intimacy in the United States.
- How did place (state laws, public/private, urban/rural) shape interracial relationships? In other words, why and how did interracial relationships develop in different parts of the country? What are some similarities and differences?
Evaluation Criteria: The paper is worth 20% of your final grade. Each paper must include the following:
