The short final essay should consist of exactly 5 short, simple and clear paragraphs (introduction, three body paragraphs, conclusion) and address a research question that the student has formulated independently through the construction of an argument. The introduction should introduce the topic, problem and thesis (claim). Paragraphs 2, 3 and 4 should each provide evidence to support one point that supports the thesis (claim). The conclusion should summarize the points made in paragraphs 2-4 and synthesize them to show how, when combined, they support the claim made in the introduction and indicate how this claim solves the original problem. For each paragraph in the body (2-4), there should be one citation to show where the student obtained the evidence to support the point made in the paragraph. The student may use primary sources, but it is recommended to check with the instructor in advance to make sure they are valid primary sources (For example, a diary or a translation of a document published online could be a valid primary source). The student may also use acceptable secondary sources. (The sources cited in the Final Essay may be the same as those listed in the Annotated Bibliography but they do not have to be. It is your choice.)
