Explanatory Essay Prompt & Grading Rubrics
In this unit, you read texts that express authors’ ideas of home and specifically how the British Empire and colonization impacted their understanding of what it means to call a place “home.”
For your final essay, you will write an explanatory essay in which you select examples from social history and personal reflections to answer this question:
What does it mean to call a place home and how did British Colonization complicate that for those living in colonized countries?

Essay Requirements:
- An introduction with a clear hook, bridge, and thesis statement.
- Three body paragraphs with at least one piece of evidence per paragraph.
- 1 body paragraph about what it means to call home.
- 2 body paragraph why British Colonization complicated it.
- A conclusion that summarizes your main points and leaves the reader with one final thoughtful statement.
Must be in MLA format: double spaced, Times New Roman size 12 font
