Week 5: What does AI say about GMOs, Cloning, Stem Cells, and other Biotechnology Topics?

This week we will again explore Generative AI tools as study partners. If needed, review the UMGC Library’s Artificial Intelligence Guide again. Complete Part 1 and 2 for the main response.

Part 1

Write a unique question (not yet asked by classmates) based on this week’s textbook readings, or recommended videos, that relates to biotechnology. Use this question as a prompt in a Generative AI tool. Consider asking opinion-based questions, asking for recent examples of research on a specific biotechnology-related topic, or personal experiences to see what you get. Let’s challenge AI beyond just fact-based questions!

As UMGC students you have free access to Microsoft’s Copilot, which is a generative AI tool. Go to this link and use your UMGC student email and password to log in: https://copilot.microsoft.com/

Alternatively, you can use the free version of ChatGPT (requires an account, email address needed), or any other generative AI tool that you have access to, are familiar with or would like to try.

When you ask the question, give AI instructions to keep the length of the answer below 250 words.

Explore a few prompt modifications based on what you learned from the CLEAR Framework, in the Prompting AI section of the Library’s AI Guide. Provide additional guidance to AI to optimize the output.

Include the following in your main response:

  • Your best prompt
  • A brief description of the modifications you tried and/or the additional guidance you gave AI, demonstrating that you applied advice from the CLEAR Framework
  • The AI Output you received from the best prompt. Cite the AI output in APA format. See the Citing AI section in the library AI guide.

Part 2

Briefly reflect on at least two (2) of the following questions:

  • How do the answers provided by the AI tool compare to the information you read in the textbook readings or learned about from the videos? Include at least one direct quote from the Week 5 assigned learning resources.
  • Did you find any mistakes or inaccurate statements? If the output includes a statement that you don’t know is correct, do a web search to confirm with a reliable source. Cite that source.
  • Did the AI output improve with the modifications you made? Explain.
  • If the AI tool provided references, do they seem like reliable/appropriate references? Explain.

Post a minimum of two (2) substantial replies to your classmates

In your replies,

  • Has your experience using this generative AI tool changed since week 2? Explain how.
  • Have you explored AI tools on your own since week 2?
  • Has your opinion about using generative AI as a study tool changed since week 2?
  • Did you find the two AI guidance discussion topics in this class useful? Why or why not? Suggestions for improvement are welcome!
