This is an assignment in which you will critically analyze and appraise a qualitative nursing research article. There is one part to this assignment, due this week.
The following document provides a template with further instruction for completing Critical Analysis and Appraisal: Qualitative Nursing Research. In order to fill out the document, you will need to download it and open in through Adobe Acrobat Reader. Adobe Acrobat Reader can be downloaded here. Uncheck all of the optional offers and click “Download Acrobat Reader.”
This is a modified appraisal tool. In the assigned Week 5 readings, you will notice there are several tools mentioned that are available to analyze and appraise various studies. One toolset comes from the Critical Appraisals Skills Programme (CASP) website. There are several CASP Appraisal Checklists. Since the intention here is to critically assess a qualitative study, the CASP Qualitative Checklist is appropriate. Note that if we were assessing a non-qualitative piece, we would select a different checklist.
Using the criteria in the template provided, analyze and appraise your selected qualitative research article. Fill out the assessment entirely, being sure to add rationales and explanations in all comment sections. Please use APA style citing and referencing rather than Harvard style, which is mentioned in the CASP tool instructions.
Working within the same group, you will select and analyze a primary report of qualitative nursing research published in the journal Applied Nursing Research. Note that this is a professional, peer-reviewed nursing journal. Select a report from the following 2021 issue: vol 58. The first author of the article must be an RN. Quantitative, mixed-methods, concept analysis, secondary analysis, and integrated or systematic review publications should not be used for this assignment.
As before, the work should be done collaboratively, rather than dividing the work and completing certain portions individually. In other words, complete all sections of the appraisal tool on your own, noting challenging areas and questions you have along the way. Upload your individual work to your group’s discussion space. Note that you must post before viewing other’s posts. It is recommended your group set a deadline for this. Please note the “Group Activities” policy in the Syllabus. Failure to upload individual work to the group’s discussion space prior to your group’s set deadline may result in a “0” for the assignment due to lack of substantive contributions.
Then, meet as a group to discuss the work you completed individually, including any challenging parts. Come to an agreement on the content of answers, compose a final product, and submit one product per group.
You will be evaluated based on the criteria outlined in the rubric. The rubric will be applied to critiques of 1) primary, qualitative studies; 2) studies where the first author is an RN; and 3) articles selected from the designated journal with specified parameters (i.e., year and volume). Critique of quantitative, mixed-methods, concept analysis, secondary analysis, and integrated or systematic review publications and/or studies where the first author is not an RN and/or articles selected outside of the designated journal with specified parameters will not be accepted for grading and thus receive “0” points.
Please submit both the completed appraisal tool and your selected research article as a PDF. Both are required for grading; the late policy will be applied unless both are submitted by the due date and time.
