Unit3-Ch6-8: Turnitin-Graded DQ: Submit your graded DQ response here, by Thursday, revise as needed, up to 3 times before the due date

  1. Scenario: Analyzing Information Security, Competitive Advantage, and Business Processes in a Local Organization

    1. For this assignment, select one local business or organization you can visit (e.g., a healthcare provider, retail store, or service-based business such as a fitness center or community bank branch). Spend time observing how the company operates, noting details about managing customer interactions, using technology, and handling business processes. You may also review any informational materials they provide (e.g., brochures and posters) or explore their online presence. Still, your primary focus should be on what you observe firsthand during your visit.

Develop a graded DQ response (up to 800 words max) to answer the following questions based on your observations and the readings from Chapters 6, 7, and 8. Generic responses that lack personal observation will not earn full credit. Include specific, personal details to illustrate your insights in answering the following questions:

      Chapter 6: Information Systems Security

      1. Identifying Security Measures: Describe any physical or digital security measures you observed that protect customer data. For instance, did you see password-protected computer screens, locked storage for files, or secure customer access points? Share specific details you noticed, such as how staff handle customer data, whether passwords were visibly protected, or any signage indicating data privacy practices.

      2. Security Threats and Vulnerabilities: Based on what you saw, what kinds of security risks might this business face? For example, are there physical vulnerabilities, such as open access to secure areas, or digital vulnerabilities, like public Wi-Fi for customers? Refer to real examples from your visit that could indicate potential weaknesses in their security.

      3. Human Element in Security: Reflect on staff behaviors you observed that might impact security. Did you notice any practices that either enhance or risk security (e.g., leaving screens unlocked, greeting each customer by name)? Describe specific interactions that show how employee behavior influences security.

Chapter 7: Leveraging Information Systems for Competitive Advantage

      1. Technology and Competitive Advantage: What types of technology does the business use that might provide a competitive advantage? Look for details such as self-checkout kiosks, a loyalty rewards app, or a website that highlights their offerings. Describe specific technologies you observed, and explain how each might enhance customer experience or distinguish the business from competitors.

      2. Applying Porter’s Value Chain Model: Identify at least two primary activities (e.g., inbound logistics, operations, service) and one support activity (e.g., human resources management, technology development) from Porter’s value chain that you observed in action. Provide detailed examples of each based on what you witnessed, such as how efficiently products were restocked, how staff handled customer service, or how technology supported daily operations.

      3. Sustainable Competitive Advantage: Based on what you observed, do you think the business’s use of technology provides a long-term advantage? Reflect on unique aspects of their technology or processes that might be hard for competitors to copy, providing specific examples from your visit.

Chapter 8: Business Processes and ERP Systems

      1. Observing a Key Business Process: Identify one specific business process you observed (e.g., customer check-in, checkout, product restocking) and describe it in detail. Discuss how well this process seemed organized and efficient, and suggest one area where it could be improved based on your observations.

      2. ERP System Use and Potential: Considering the business’s size and type, do you think it uses an ERP system? If not, explain why, and describe what benefits an ERP system might bring to its operations. Support your answer with specific details about the business’s current processes and potential areas of improvement.

      3. Process Improvement Suggestions: Based on your observations, propose one change that could improve the business’s efficiency or customer experience. Your suggestion should be rooted in specific examples of what you saw during your visit and should demonstrate an understanding of business process management.

    2. Application of Concepts

In your responses, use concepts and terminology from Chapters 6, 7, and 8 to demonstrate your understanding of core ideas, such as the CIA triad in security, Porter’s value chain, and ERP systems. Avoid generic descriptions by grounding your analysis in specific observations from your visit. Points will be awarded based on detail and specificity when describing your firsthand experiences in answering the assignment’s questions.

  2. Submit your graded DQ to Turnitin:
    1. Post your DQ response in this Turnitin forum between Monday and Thursday by 11 pm Turnitin will generate a Similarity Index (SI) report to check for plagiarism. Note that the SI % and report are not your grade; they are only information that will help you eliminate areas that Turnitin flags as potential plagiarism.
    2. Review the areas report returned from Turnitin by selecting the icon under the column “Viewed.”  You can revise and resubmit up to three times before the due date. After your third submission, the SI report may take up to 24 hours to update.  Please plan for this.
    3. Tip: Avoid copy-pasting from external sources—paraphrase the information to demonstrate understanding. Always cite sources to avoid accidental plagiarism.
    4. A 10% Late penalty will be applied for each day late, up to 30% max.
  1. Get ready to participate in the class discussion. Once you have addressed the flagged errors, you can copy and paste your final graded DQ to the Discussion Forum to begin the conversation with the class. You do not need me to grade the graded DQ response before you can post it.

When your assignment is graded

I typically grade your DQ and participation within seven days from the last day of the graded DQ’s week.

Academic Integrity

No Generative Artificial Intelligence (AI) Allowed. Using AI tools like ChatGPT or Grammarly GO is prohibited for this assignment and will be treated as academic misconduct. If you need clarification on whether a tool is allowed, ask your instructor before using it. Turnitin will check for both plagiarism and AI-generated content.

In addition to providing a visible SI % to students, Turnitin generates an AI % accessible only to the instructor. To ensure an accurate evaluation, I examine the SI and AI %  and may contact you for further communication if necessary.

As necessary, I will perform additional Turnitin checks for the AI% of specific participation posts. Please review the statement on AI and Turnitin on how I use these two numbers in grading.
