The case summary is the final step in the assessment process. Here is another opportunity to bridge theory and practice. We will begin by examining the foundations of Group Therapy, Goal Setting, and Treatment Plans. We will continue with goal setting and begin learning more about the treatment and recovery plan in the assessment process. For this assignment, there is a three-part YouTube video series of a group therapy session. The group includes five participants with diverse backgrounds and presenting concerns. As graduate-level social work students, your task is to analyze group dynamics, identify clinical techniques used by the facilitator, and apply your knowledge to develop SMART goals and treatment objectives for three of the five group members.
Upon completion of this assignment you will be able to:

Assignment
This is a group assignment; students will work in teams of 3–4 members (see Announcement for Group Members). At the start of your group work, please take time to collaboratively decide on each group member’s role. Clear role assignments help ensure expectations are understood, tasks are shared equitably, and everyone has the opportunity to contribute meaningfully.
Please be aware that some portions of this assignment will require group work that must be completed outside of our regular class time. While we will begin the assignment in class and review expectations together, you will need to coordinate with your peers. Please plan ahead to coordinate with your group members—whether by meeting virtually, communicating through email, or using other agreed-upon methods—to complete the required components of this assignment. Each group will observe, analyze, and apply clinical skills across group dynamics, facilitator techniques, and treatment planning. A peer evaluation will be included to assess individual contribution.
Watch and/or listen to parts 1-3 of the video series Grief Counseling Group Sessions (transcription is available on YouTube as well). Take notes on each group member’s contributions, challenges, and engagement. Discuss your findings with your group members. Write a paper or create a PowerPoint presentation that includes the four sections below.
Be sure to clearly label each section of your paper/presentation. Use the following section headings, formatted in bold font:
1. Brief Synopsis of the Group
- Describe the structure of the group (e.g., type, setting, purpose: open/closed, voluntary/mandated, clinical/support)
- Identify group norms, stages of group development, and any evident roles – provide examples (Tucker and Yalom)
2. Facilitator Techniques
- Identify at least three social work techniques used by the facilitator
- Evaluate the effectiveness of these techniques and suggest alternative approaches where appropriate.
- Discuss how the facilitator managed group dynamics (e.g., conflict, inclusion, support).
3. Ethical Considerations
- Highlight any ethical considerations or moments that raise questions about boundaries, confidentiality, or client safety.
- Explain how you would address this concern as a group facilitator.
4. Treatment Planning
- Select two group members to focus on.
- For each, identify a key grief-related challenge or theme.
- Develop a SMART goal for each member tailored to their current needs and provide 2–3 treatment objectives to support progress toward that goal.
Your SMART goal must meet the following criteria:
- Specific – Clearly define what the participant will do.
- Measurable – Include how progress will be tracked.
- Achievable – Ensure the goal is realistic given the participant’s current situation.
- Relevant – The goal should align with the participant’s identified issue and the group’s purpose.
- Time-bound – Set a clear timeframe for when the goal should be achieved.
5. Evaluation
- Describe observable signs of emotional or cognitive progress in either individual members or the group as a whole.·
- What specific group behaviors or interactions suggest growth, engagement, or emotional movement?How could a social worker track or document progress over time?
6. Termination Planning
If this group were nearing the end of services:
- What strategies could be used to prepare members for termination?
- How would you ensure that the ending is affirming, inclusive, and strengths-based?
- Suggest appropriate referrals or ongoing supports for members.

7. Submit Peer Evaluation FormPeer Evaluation Form
Submit your peer evaluation individually in Engage no later than Friday of Week 8 by 11:59 pm ET. Provide honest and constructive feedback. You must complete all sections below to obtain the maximum number of points. This should be submitted in the W8 Assignment: Case Summary assignment section.
The peer evaluation will account for 10% of your final grade for the assignment. Discrepancies in peer ratings may result in individual grade adjustments.
The overarching requirements for this assignment are the following:
- Depth and quality of your analysis and recommendations, as well as how thoroughly you address each required component of the assignment
- APA formatting for the entire document to include a cover page, any in-text citation, and the reference page. Deductions are given for papers that do not align with APA formatting to include citations and references. Seek the APA Manual for assistance or the tutoring services provided.
- Sentence structure, grammar, spelling, and logical coherence are important and will be evaluated as part of the grading criteria.
- Use third person perspective when writing this paper.

Method of Evaluation
This assignment is worth 100 points and 20% of your final grade and will be graded based on the applicable rubric.
An extension for this assignment will only be granted in cases of extenuating circumstances (e.g., medical emergencies, family emergencies) and must be approved by the instructor. Extensions may include point deductions at the instructor’s discretion, depending on the nature of the circumstances and the timing of the request. Students are encouraged to communicate with the instructor as soon as possible if they anticipate needing an extension.
