The use of CO2 emissions data in procurement and sustainability decision-making in the mining industry

This assignment is a subsection in the Literature review section of a thesis. The aim of the thesis is to understand the underlying factors that drive industrial customers, particularly in the mining sector, to request CO2e calculations from their suppliers, and to explore how such information is used in their procurement decisions. The research questions are:1. Why do industrial customers request CO2e calculations from their suppliers?2. How do customers utilize CO2e data in their procurement and sustainability decision-making processes?3. What features and capabilities should a CO2e calculator include to meet these customer needs and align with relevant reporting standards?This subsection explores the literature to answer the second question.This research is done for a company – Metso, which is a global supplier of crushing equipments, spare parts, and services for the mining and aggregates processing industries.The geographical scope of the research focuses on the Nordic region. The industry context is limited to the mining sector, with particular emphasis on the procurement of aftermarket parts. The thesis aims to provide practical recommendations that can support the future development of customer-oriented CO2e reporting solutions.
