BIOL2117L: Introductory Microbiology Lab
Disease Project
My approved disease is rabies (Lyssavirus/rabies virus – Rhabdoviridae family).
Disease Project Instructions
The Disease Project is a capstone project for this class and counts as a major part of your grade. Be sure to carefully read all of the instructions here and look at the examples, websites, and rubrics provided to help you achieve a good grade on your project. Ask your instructor if you have questions.
Research your approved disease and the organism that causes it. Your PowerPoint presentation should include the following at minimum:
- the scientific name of the pathogenic organism and what it is (bacterium, virus, fungus, protozoan, or helminth)
- how the organism can be cultured and isolated (if your organism is a bacterium), the structure and life cycle of the pathogen (if your organism is a virus, fungus, protozoan, or helminth)
- how it is acquired (where it is found and how it is transmitted to people)
- mechanism by which the organism causes disease (specifically, how does this organism cause the symptoms that are associated with the disease; what changes does it cause in the human body that result in the associated signs and symptoms of the disease)
- signs and symptoms of the disease (what the patient exhibits or experiences)
- diagnosis of the disease (how does the doctor determine exactly which disease it is; how do they rule out similar diseases)
- treatment of the disease
- prevention
- graphics that contribute to the presentation
- credit to the graphic owner for each graphic used
You may also include “extras,” for example, history of the disease, impacts on society over time, or other interesting information that you come across in your research not covered in the above categories.
Each of these categories contributes to your grade – your presentation will be graded using the “Disease Project Presentation Rubric.” Please be sure to view the rubric so you are aware of how you will be graded.
Prepare a written annotated bibliography of the references you used in your research. An annotated bibliography includes descriptive information about each reference in paragraph form directly beneath the reference. You will turn in an Annotated Bibliography sample early in the semester and receive feedback from your instructor to help you when composing your full Annotated Bibliography that is due at the end of the semester. Your full annotated bibliography should include at the minimum 4 sources, each with the following:
• properly formatted citation in APA format
• description about what specific information you used from the source (2-3 sentences)
• discussion about why the source is a trusted, reputable source – this should include a brief discussion of both the value of the source and the credibility of the source (2-3 sentences)
The Annotated Bibliography will be graded using the “Disease Project Annotated Bibliography Rubric”. Please be sure to view the Annotated Bibliography examples and Rubric so that you are aware of how it will be graded.
This website gives instructions on how to properly format your citations. Click on APA and then look through the different sections pertaining to books, electronic resources (websites), periodicals (journals), and any other resources you use for your project.
This website will generate a citation for you but you should ALWAYS double check automatically generated citations against a reference website because the automatic citation generators are prone to errors.
This website from the University of North Carolina Chapel Hill provides instructions and examples for preparing an annotated bibliography. When writing your annotations, include elements 1, 2 and 3 under the heading “What elements might an annotation include?” found on the website.
