It is a comparitive literary analysis of the effects of the postcolonial era and ecocriticism/environmental memory through “Zong!” by M. NourbeSe Philip and “The Headstrong Historian” by Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie. The rubric is “Write a 11-page paper in which you explore, analyze, and forward a comparative literary argument that works within the themes of this course. This paper should focus on two of the primary texts we have read during this course. The paper will give you a chance to engage in literary language as well as develop an interpretative lens. It will also give you a chance to read works structurally, against or with each other, developing a crucial skill in the field of English (and beyond). As with the midterm, through various In-Class Writing Assignments, you will develop the close and critical reading skills that you will then apply in this essay. To achieve full credit, you will be expected to bring in at least 7 outside sources as part of this argument. The sources should come from peer reviewed journals that you can access through our library. Please ensure that any submission is properly formatted (MLA, 9th) and that it follows basic mechanics (spelling, grammar, syntax)” I will be using outside sources as well for this, including “Poetics of Reparation in M. NourbeSe Philip’s Zong!”, “”The Headstrong Historian”: Writing with Things Fall Apart” by Susan Vanzanten Vol. 46 Issue 2 p85-103, “A Mighty Cooperative: Postcolonialism, Ecocriticism, and Place-Based Pedagogy” Teaching Postcolonial Environmental Literature and Media, edited by Cajetan Iheka. New York: Modern Language Association of America, 2021., “The Archive and Affective Memory in M. NourbeSe Philip’s Zong!” by Jenny Sharp 2013 p465-482, and my sources from my midterm attached.
