The movie review assignment is supposed to be a fairly gentle introduction to the course. It is only 1000 words and is primarily a ‘response‘ piece – i.e. this is your response to the film:
The Social Network, directed by
David Fincher. Please watch the film on your own time. Here is the link to the
movie: https://ww21.soap2day.day/the-social-network-soap2day/
.
However, it is a response that has to be in the context of your early further explorations of ideas and theories about digital society, digital life, and digital
sociology.
So, for example, if you notice that the film you have chosen relies on or reflects or could be seen as embodying Foucault‘s ‘panopticism/governmentality‘, or Weber‘s idea of ‘rationality‘, or a dystopian way of thinking about
impact of a digital device., then the idea is that you explain those relationships and how the film does this. If you notice or know of other connections, like the way the film relates to another earlier film or novel, or real world development in any digital technologies, then that is also interesting.
If you mention a particular work (book, article, website etc.), then please do cite it properly in
ASA
A basic structure for your essay would be:
Title
Opening paragraph, generally describing and summarizing the film (100 words)
Short paragraph outline of your themes / approach (50 words)
Body of the essay (for example, three digital sociological themes in Film X, with examples, or a digital utopian/dystopian
narrative in Film X and how this relates to Theory A etc.) (750
words)
Concluding paragraph (100 words)
