This assignment fulfills the following Course Learning Objectives:

1. Demonstrate growth in the ability to locate scholarly sources appropriate for the completion of

course assignments such as papers, quizzes, case studies and formal presentations.

2. Formulate learning strategies to support academic success and continuing professional

competence.

Purpose:

The purpose of this paper is to provide students the opportunity to practice the following academic

skills:

• Performing a literature search

• Synthesizing information from different scholarly sources

• Writing an academic paper

• Using correct spelling, grammar, and punctuation

• Correct use of the APA Manual (7thed.)

Instructions:

1. Choose one topic from the list below:

▪ Care for older adults with urinary incontinence in long-term care: Recommendations

for nursing practice.

▪ Care for older adults with impaired swallowing long-term care:

Recommendations for nursing practice.

▪ Care for older adults with responsive behaviours in long-term care:

Recommendations for nursing practice.

▪ Care for older adults with pain in long-term care: Recommendations for nursing

practice.

2. Perform a scholarly literature search using strategies learned in class (recommend use of

CINAHL database). Christine Neilson, U of M Librarian, is available to help you.

[email protected] Select three (3) articles for this paper. All articles are required

to be from peer-reviewed journals. The peer-reviewed journals can be from anywhere in the world.

3. The articles should NOT be more than ten years old (2015 to present only). Sorry, no

exceptions.

4. All articles need to be related to recommendations/interventions specific to

Nursing practice which can be implemented in the long-term care (personal care/nursing home)

setting. Students are also required to utilize interventional (or experimental) studies or clinical

trials where “the researcher actively interferes with nature – by performing an intervention in

some or all study participants – to determine the effect of exposure to the intervention on the

natural course of events.” (Aggarwal and Raganathan, 2019).

5. Remember the keywords used for your literature search.

6. Students are required to upload a screenshot of only the first page of each article to be

handed in with their scholarly paper.

7. Have your literature search completed and three articles ready for class #2 on May 12. We

will be completing part of this assignment in class. It is a very good idea to read your articles

prior to this class. More information TBA.

8. Write a paper consisting of the following sections:

Title Page as per APA guidelines

• Keywords to be included on title page

Introduction

• Briefly introduce the topic

• Explain why the topic is important to nursing care of older adults in long-term care settings

• Include a thesis statement

• Maximum 1/2page

Body (each point should have one or two paragraphs)

1) Background information

i. Concisely describe the key concepts of your paper topic with sources

2) Literature review: briefly introduce/summarize your articles.

ii. Aim/purpose of the article.

iii. How the authors intend to achieve that aim

iv. Brief description of the intervention in question

v. Results/outcomes of the article.

3) Describe how the three papers are the same.

4) Describe how the three papers are different.

5) Practice recommendations: from the literature, discuss which nursing approaches or strategies you would recommend using.

Provide rationales.

Maximum four pages.

Conclusion

• Summarize the topic background in one or two sentences

• Summarize how the papers were similar

• Summarize how they were different

• Restate which strategy or approach you recommend

• Maximum 1/2 page

Technical Aspects

• Use APA style 7th Edition.

• Apply mechanics of good writing (grammar, spelling, punctuation) that you have practiced

in this course.

• Maximum length: 5 pages. Minimum length: 4 pages. This excludes title page and

reference page.

• Font: Times New Roman, Size 12, double spaced, one-inch margins.

• Be sure to include full links for your articles on your reference page; our teaching team needs to be able to access your three articles when evaluating your paper.
