Response Paper no. 4 focuses on the social and political issues of the late 1960s and early 1970s in American history.

In the textbook America: A Concise History Vol. 2, 6th Edition, please read Chapter 27 “Beyond Civil Rights, 1966-1973,”  particularly pages 810-815 and Chapter 28 “Days of Rage, 1968-1972,” particularly pages 829-840.

After reading the chapters, please answer the following:

  1. On pages 810-813, what factors and issues influenced the rise of the Black Power Movement? Give four examples from the chapter.
  2. On pages 814-815, what factors and issues influenced the rise of the Chicano Movement? Give three examples from the chapter.
  3. On pages 829-833, what factors and issues influenced the rise of the Student Movement? Give three examples from the chapter.
  4. On pages 838-840, what factors and issues influenced the rise of Women’s Liberation and the Gay Rights Movement? Give three examples from the chapter.
  5. Finally, did you learn anything from the chapter?

When answering these questions, please write approximately 3-4 pages, double-space, and in full paragraphs. Don’t just copy and paste the information from the book. Try to summarize your examples in your own words as best you can.

As you answer the questions make sure to cite the pages from the book. Avoid using too many quotes in your paper. You don’t need a Works Cited page when citing from the book, just make sure to cite the specific page numbers in the MLA style. Points will be deducted if the pages are not cited. If you are planning to use AI, or some sort of internet source for your paper, or you copied someone else’s paper or if your paper is so incoherent that it doesn’t make any sense then you will receive no credit.

Again, avoid throwing in a bunch of quotes. Try to explain things in your own words, but make sure to cite the page numbers to show where you got the information from.

Please upload your paper to Canvas, which Canvas then will generate a Turnitin report. Make sure to type your paper in a word document or a Google doc format since Turnitin cannot read text or other types of document formats. By the way, make sure to review your Turnitin percentage. If the percentage is too high (like 40% or above) or even too low like 0%, you might not get any credit for the paper. Make the necessary changes to ensure a good grade.

This paper is worth 50 points and is due on Friday May 3rd. Late response papers will be docked five points for each day they are late. Please make sure to turn in your response papers on time.

Factors that will impact your score:

  1. Plagiarism—Plagiarism is defined as the act of using or fabricating the ideas of another person as if they were one’s own, without giving credit to the source. If you fail to properly cite your sources or invent your sources this is a form of plagiarism. Students who purposely engage in copying large sections of material from books, the internet, other student papers, or in anyway representing another’s work as their own will result in a failed grade for the course and be referred to the Office of Student Conduct.
  2. Lack of Evidence—Your paper does not contain any specific examples/information from the textbook.
  3. Lack of Citations—Your paper lacks any references from the textbook in each paragraph.
  4. Too many quotes—Your paper contains too many quotes in each paragraph.
  5. Lack of Paragraph Structure—Your paper lacks a clear paragraph structure. In other words, you throw in too many issues into one paragraph, it just reads like one big blog.
