Research Summaries
Before the study is done, a research summary is written. The summary is based on what is found when the question of “Is this FINER?” has been answered and the research question written. It is a way for prospective funding sources and peers to give the seal of approval to move forward with the study. The introduction should engage the reader so they want to read the entire summary.
The summary contains the following components:
- Introduction: Summarize the issue and why it is important.
- Who could be interested in the topic (e.g., scientists, policymakers)?
- How much is already known about the topic?
- What is missing from this current knowledge?
- What new insights will your research contribute?
- Why do you believe this research is worth doing?
- Write the hypothesis.
- Literature Review
- Supporting literature (3 studies)
- Overview
- Relevance
- Findings
- Summary of supporting literature
- Conclusion
- Restate hypothesis
- Importance of findings
- Who are the findings relevant to
This summary shouldn’t be too long, generally around 400 words, highlighting the points listed in the order shown above. There are more details on the final assignment itself. Remember that a research summary is already going to be reviewed by people who are experts in the field or have a vested interest in the subject and you should target language appropriately – it should be technical, but at a level where an expert may not understand the details of the condition. Here is a great article that goes over each of the three components: Summary and Synthesis: How to Present a Research Proposal (National Library of Medicine). These well-written research proposals are the reason we have the advancements in medicine which are saving lives.
