Separated at Birth: Twins and Triplets Reunite after Cruel Experiment | ENDEVR Documentary

Short Description

Working individually, students will write and submit a short reflection on

their reflection of the film. Students will connect their analysis to this unit’s

concepts and readings.

Instructions

Note: “The wording of this paper doesn’t need to be overly formal since it’s more of

a personal reflection. I’ll keep it clear and straightforward, focusing on my personal

reactions and insights rather than strict academic language.”

“All content in this paper must include in-text citations following APA 7th edition

guidelines. This includes referencing both the documentary and any supporting

academic sources to clearly attribute information and maintain academic integrity.”

Working individually, students will provide a concise summary of the socialjustice themes presented in the film and how the original study came to pass.

Students will cover key concepts and theoretical perspectives learned in this

unit and what this film taught them about values, morals, and ethics in

present-day psychology. Read the following questions and instructions

carefully to prepare for your submission. Students are not required to

answer all the questions in part 2 and 3 but do require to answer both

questions in part 1:

Add an Introduction: Start with a brief overview of the study featured in the documentary Separated at Birth: Twins and Triplets Reunite After Cruel Experiment (ENDEVR, 2021). Explain the Study.

Part 1: Scholarly Exploration

• What does the academic literature say about this documentary film?

Look at literature on the film itself or studies of twins separated at

birth. The academic literature has extensively examined the ethical and

scientific implications of this study.

• Research some history on research ethics and discuss how this

experiment fits into the history of research in psychology.

Part 2: Critical Thinking

• Describe the social context in which this study came to pass

• What were the researchers trying to uncover? Do you think their topic

of study was important? The researchers, led by Dr. Peter Neubauer, aimed

to investigate the impact of upbringing on personality development by

studying genetically identical siblings raised in different socioeconomic

environments. The goal was to discern the relative effects of nature versus

nurture. While the topic of study was significant for understanding human

development, the methods employed were deeply flawed. Rather than openly

studying twins and triplets, they were intentionally separated, causing severe

emotional and psychological harm. Thus, the importance of the research does

not justify the means by which it was conducted.

• Was the study unethical? Why so? yes

• What were the consequences of this unethical study?

• Describe the ways in which research ethics were violated in this study.

Please be very specific

• Discuss the resulting social justice actions that have occurred as a

result.Part 3: Personal Exploration

• Pick a moment/event in the film that sparked your own curiosity or

had an impact on you?

Note:

pick this moment :

Discovering the Sealed Study Records (56:30 – 1:00:10): The triplets learn that the study’s

records are sealed at Yale University until 2065, preventing them from accessing crucial

information about their own lives and the extent of the psychological manipulation they

endured. This realization leaves them feeling powerless and exploited.
