Develop a powerpoint reflecting Melanie, bird with a broken wing: a mother’s story, Author: Beth Harry, that includes:
- The family characteristics and interactions in the book and the family’s cultural values and practices.
- Perspectives of every major character in the book.
- Describe and analyze the process of assessment, diagnosis, and intervention. Be sure to include how the family was involved (ex. there is a very clear and highlighted process of identification, assessment, diagnosis, and then of interventions to help Melanie. Talk about this process and how the family was involved).
- A list of interventions based on the family’s cultural values and practices. The book discusses many of the interventions they used for Melanie and how they made her more independent. Discuss these interventions and how they are reflecting the family’s cultural values and beliefs.
- Discuss major changes in beliefs/perspectives of Beth throughout the book (“turning points”). Think about how her perspectives and beliefs are changing as the process is going on.
- Description and analysis of interactions between family and educational/medical professionals. It does not have to be every interaction, but analyze how the actions occurred (Were they positive? Negative? How were they received? What were the outcomes?)
- Description and analysis of interactions between family and friends. (Were they positive? Negative? How were they received? What were the outcomes?)
- After reading the Habits of Mind article list the Habits of Mind professionals working with children with special needs and their families need to internalize.
- Explain why you selected those specific Habits of Mind.
- Which Habits of Mind do you use often, and which ones do you feel you still have not mastered.
- What is the most important lesson you have learned from reading and analyzing the book?.
