Hi! I’m currently applying to PA schools, and one of the programs I’m applying to is Fairleigh Dickinson University. As part of their application, they require a one-page statement explaining why I’m specifically interested in their PA program.
I’ve drafted something already, but I’m not happy with how it sounds—it doesn’t feel engaging or personal enough, and I don’t think it highlights why FDU is such a great fit for me.
Would you be able to help me rework it? I’d love a version that hooks the reader right away and clearly connects my personal and clinical experiences to FDU’s mission and program structure. I’ll upload a document with details about my background to help guide the rewrite.
Also, if possible, I’d love if you could review FDU’s website and incorporate specific elements of the program that align well with my journey and goals.
My Life Experiences & Motivation
- I became my father’s caregiver during his battle with liver cancer. I attended all his appointments, translated for his providers, helped with his medications, and saw how impactful compassionate care can be. That experience is what first drew me to medicine.
- I’ve worked as a medical assistant in pediatrics, podiatry, and internal medicine. I’ve taken vitals, given injections, assisted in procedures like wound care and X-rays, and helped patients feel calm and cared for—especially those who were nervous or unsure.
- I shadowed PA Sanna Arshad and saw firsthand how PAs lead with empathy, adapt quickly, and handle a wide range of responsibilities. Watching her work helped me see exactly where I want to be.
- As a first-generation Egyptian-American, I’ve often helped Arabic-speaking patients who couldn’t fully express themselves. Being fluent in Arabic allowed me to step in, and it made me realize how important it is to be culturally and linguistically aware as a provider.
- My academic journey hasn’t been perfect. I struggled during the time my father was sick, but I chose to retake my core science classes and raised my grades significantly. I’m now graduating summa cum laude with a bachelor’s in biology, and I’m proud of how far I’ve come.
- FDU is close to home, which is important to me. It would allow me to stay close to the community I want to serve. I also have friends in the pharmacy and undergrad programs who have told me amazing things about the supportive, encouraging environment at FDU.
