This study aims to explore how ASEAN and EU diplomats construct and negotiate narratives around respect, empathy, and equality in the context of interregional diplomacy. By focusing on qualitative interpretations from those directly engaged in diplomatic practice, the research seeks to reveal deeper insights into how mutual understanding is fostered or hindered in ASEAN–EU relations. The specific objectives of the study are:
1. To examine how ASEAN and EU diplomats articulate the concept of respect within their diplomatic narratives.
This objective focuses on understanding what “respect” means to diplomats from both regions, and how it is communicated, affirmed, or challenged in their interactions.
2. To explore how empathy is expressed and perceived in the diplomatic interactions between ASEAN and EU representatives.
This involves identifying discursive strategies and narrative patterns that reveal empathetic understanding or the lack thereof.
3. To investigate how notions of equality are framed and negotiated in ASEAN–EU diplomatic exchanges.
Here, the emphasis is on how diplomats perceive and navigate the asymmetrical structures of both regions while promoting parity in dialogue and cooperation.
4. To identify key narrative strategies used by diplomats in negotiating mutual understanding across differing diplomatic cultures.
This objective aims to capture recurring themes, metaphors, and storylines that facilitate (or obstruct) value-based understanding in ASEAN–EU relations.
4. Research Questions
To guide the inquiry and ensure alignment with the research objectives, the study addresses the following research questions:
1. How do ASEAN and EU diplomats narrate and interpret the concept of respect in their diplomatic practices?
This question investigates the language, framing, and contextual expressions that reveal what constitutes respectful interaction across the two regions.
2. In what ways is empathy communicated or experienced in ASEAN–EU diplomatic engagements?
It seeks to uncover both verbal and non-verbal expressions of empathy, and whether diplomats feel understood and emotionally acknowledged by their counterparts.
3. How do diplomats from ASEAN and the EU perceive and negotiate the idea of equality in their diplomatic relationships?
This question probes how perceived power imbalances are acknowledged or downplayed and how equality is constructed discursively despite structural asymmetries.
4. What narrative techniques are employed by ASEAN and EU diplomats to foster mutual understanding across different diplomatic norms and expectations?
This involves analyzing storytelling methods, rhetorical strategies, or symbolic references used to build bridges between regional values and diplomatic cultures.
