This study aims to explore how ASEAN and EU diplomats construct and negotiate narratives around respect, empathy, and equality in the context of interregional diplomacy. By focusing on qualitative interpretations from those directly engaged in diplomatic practice, the research seeks to reveal deeper insights into how mutual understanding is fostered or hindered in ASEAN–EU relations. The specific objectives of the study are:

1. To examine how ASEAN and EU diplomats articulate the concept of respect within their diplomatic narratives.

3. To investigate how notions of equality are framed and negotiated in ASEAN–EU diplomatic exchanges.
