Media and Culture Research Project PART ONE: Annotated Bibliography Assignment Sheet

Media and Culture Research Project

PART ONE: Annotated Bibliography Assignment Sheet

BACKGROUND:

As part of your Media and Culture multimodal project, you will need to conduct research and create an annotated bibliography in APA 7 format for EIGHT of your sources. For this assignment, you’ll be analyzing a variety of academic and non-academic sources that pertain to your research project for class.

To create an annotated bibliography, you’ll first write an introduction to the bibliography that helps orient your audience to the sources you’re analyzing. The annotated bibliography is a way for you to start building your database of sources for your larger, multimodal research project.

****While you must annotate 8 sources, you may use as many sources as you want for your literature review and multimodal projects. You must include references for ALL SOURCES USED IN YOUR PAPER, but you only need to annotate 8.

Requirements for the Annotated Bibliography

  • Before you jump into your entries, you must write a 2-3 paragraph introduction that discusses the types of sources (academic, news, government, etc.) you’re using for the project, what patterns you see across the sources, and what fields of study you’re drawing from (aviation, health sciences, journalism, etc) and how the credibility of each source enriches your project and ethos.

Please spend at least one full paragraph of the intro discussing the credibility of your sources. You should describe

  • How Lateral Reading helped you determine the credibility of your sources

  • How you decided a source was worthwhile after conducting the CRAAP test on your most important sources

  • How the credibility of these sources contributes to your ethos and how you want readers to see you as an author/researcher.

  • You must include 8 fully cited sources in alphabetical order by author’s last name in each section you have. You’ll want to include a variety of resources, ranging from at least

(1) book (online/open access is acceptable, and available through the library’s website)

(4) peer-reviewed articles, government documents (think FAA/ CDC, etc), or official an organization’s content (.edu/ hospital sites, etc)

(3) news articles, popular sources, or multimedia sources (be careful to make sure these are credible).

At least (3) of the total (8) sources must be representative of a different point of view than the one you already hold. This can include scholarly or non-scholarly sources.

  • Each entry should contain at least 1.5-2 paragraphs of writing, but no more than 3, and contain the following three distinct sections:

  1. For the summary portion of the annotation, you should offer a brief synopsis of the piece’s argument, author’s credentials, author’s methods (e.g, survey, interview, who research participants are, etc), and key pieces of evidence the author writes right at the start of each annotation.

  2. For the author’s note, you should discuss the value of the piece to your research efforts. Write about how the source better helps you understand the issues you are researching, how you might build on this work, how it has challenged you to change your thinking or research question, or what sources you now want to collect after reading it.

  3. Last, for the rhetorical analysis component, you should write why you believe the source is credible, how the author is trying to persuade audiences, and what methods they use to do so. This is a good place to describe the lateral reading you conducted to verify their credibility.
