Assignment 2 — Title: Planning Document (Lesson Plan) 3000 words

Overview:

Purpose/Learning Outcomes: The purpose of this task is to build on the group work of AT1A through individually practicing lesson plan design, including learning activity sequencing and by developing a one hour lesson plan that is linked to a specific classroom context and learner profile/s and that is intended for a VCE Business Management Topic.

To assist with evaluation and evidence collection, the lesson may be one taught on placement, however that is not a requirement of this assessment task.

The task specifically asks you to:

  • demonstrate knowledge and understanding of research into how students learn and the implications for teaching
  • discuss effective lesson plan design
  • demonstrate knowledge and understanding of the concepts, substance and structure of the content and teaching strategies of Business Management (2.1)
  • organise content into an effective learning and teaching sequence (2.2)
  • plan, structure and sequence a learning program by using knowledge of student learning and content (inclusive of a range of effective teaching strategies 3.3)
  • use curriculum assessment and reporting knowledge to design a learning sequence and lesson plan (2.3)
  • construct a one hour lesson plan for a VCE Business Management topic
  • set learning goals that provide achievable challenges for students of varying abilities and characteristics (3.1)
  • demonstrate knowledge of a range of resources that engage students in their learning by selecting and/or creating appropriate teaching resources and materials, including using ICT (3.4)
  • design and sequence suitable learning activities to achieve the stated learning outcomes
  • demonstrate knowledge of teaching and learning strategies that are responsive to the learning strengths and needs of students from diverse linguistic, cultural, religious and socioeconomic backgrounds (1.3) as you justify the learning activities by linking to specific learner profiles and classroom context
  • suggest differentiation options to cater for students with diverse linguistic, cultural, religious and socioeconomic backgrounds.

Criteria for Assessment: The assessment task will be assessed in accordance with the AT1B Matrix and with reference to the FoE Grade Descriptors.

Instructions:

Lesson Plan Design (about 600 words)

Explain how a lesson plan can be designed to support effective teaching and learning. You might wish to discuss:

  • essential elements that should be included in a lesson plan and their importance for learning
  • the importance of learning the relevant Key Knowledge and Key Skill/s dot points from the VCE Study Design
  • linking Learning Outcomes to the specified curriculum.

Written Justification of Pedagogy (about 1,500 words)

Explain how the lesson plan is designed to support effective teaching and learning. You might wish to discuss:

  • improving student learning through resource selection and/or creation
  • justification of chosen teaching strategies in relation to improving student learning and achieving stated learning outcomes
  • differentiating learning activities to cater for particular needs of specific classroom contexts including characteristics of learner profiles.

Written Lesson Plan Evaluation (900 words)

Evaluate the lesson plan in relation to:

  • justifying the organisation of content and sequencing of learning activities to effectively deliver the specified content, improve student learning and achieve stated learning outcomes
  • justifying a suitable formative assessment methodology for informing learning.

Provide collected evidence where you can (i.e. placement formative assessment evidence; filmed lesson, mentor and student feedback, personal reflections) and use appropriate literature to support your response.

Where relevant, you might wish to mention or discuss further common considerations that teachers take into account when planning a lesson, such as engaging students through a hook, the need to map prior knowledge, increasing task complexity, subject specific literacy, collaborative tasks, effective questioning, discussion strategies, feedback techniques or assessment preparation.
