Assignment 1 has several Parts and covers chapters 4, 5, and 6, please read each part carefully. . Please refer to the respective chapter to provide support and rationale for your answers/analysis. Remember this is an “applied’ class; you are expected to demonstrate what you read in each Part.
Part 1: Emotional Awareness (Chapter 4 Negotiation. Select Question 10: Emotional Response (p. 153) and complete the “Emotional Awareness Guide (see Box II. 2; p.140)”
Part 2: Conflict Analysis (Chapter 4: Negotiation. Using Question 8: Two Interesting (p. 152), complete the “Conflict Analysis Guide (see Box II.1; p.138- 139)”. Be sure to address each of the elements in the Guide. In this Part, be sure to assess which negotiation approach fits best for this type of conflict.
Part 3: Negotiation Planning (Chapter 4: Negotiation ). Using Question 8: Two Interesting (p.152) and Question 9: Planning, you are planning to engage your classmates in a discussion of the group presentation topics. Using the Negotiation Planning Guide (see Box II.3; p. 141), develop plans for your meeting, including who will be presenting, where you will meet, and the proposed structure of your discussion. Be sure to provide a rationale for each of your choices about the negotiation process.
Part 4: Case Analysis
Part 4 should be at least 2- double -spaced -pages of analysis
Select ONE of the situations/ cases from Question 4 (p. 190) and analyze the case from the following approaches below. Use the questions under each approach to guide your analysis. Be sure to identify the case you selected in your analysis/paper.
1. Analyze the case using Right-based approach (Chapter 5: Right- Based Negotiation).
- What are each party’s positions? Include at least three for each in your analysis.
- If the parties bargain from a right/positional orientation, what range of outcomes might be considered?
- What type of compromise might the parties reach?
- What is the strongest right-based argument for each party?
- What are the limitations of a right-based approach in this type of situation?
- What did you learn about this approach that can be useful in everyday life?
2. Analyze the case using an Interest-based approach. (Chapter 6: Interest-Based Negotiation)
- What are each party’s underlying interests?
- What are the pros and cons (or limitations/benefits) of an interest-based approach in this type of situation?
- What did you learn about this approach that can be useful in everyday life?
3. Analyze the case using BATNA Principles (Chapter 4: Power-Based Negotiation.
- Identify at least two alternatives that each party could pursue if they were not able to reach agreement. Of these alternatives, which is the BATNA? Provide your rationale, weighing the potential benefits and costs for each alternative.
- Identify two ways in which one party can enhance her/his BATNA
- Identify two ways in which one party can degrade the other person’s BATNA
- What did you learn about this approach that can be useful in everyday life?
