Argumentation helps to clarify positions on a variety of issues and effectively formulating an argument gives us ways to evaluate conflicting claims and refute them in a respectful manner.
Instructions
This week, you will plan and begin writing the essay you will complete in Week 4.
- Planning will involve careful selection of your topic (what you will write about), audience (for whom you will write), and purpose (why you are writing on that topic for that audience).
- Research will enhance your prior knowledge and help you write from an educated, credible perspective. We’ll share all of this in the Week 3 Discussion.
- Begin writing your essay later this week, so you can share your rough draft in the Week 4 Discussion.
Topic and Audience:
To write a practical and valuable argumentative essay, identify a real-world audience such as colleagues at work, customers you serve, or even your own family members. Each of the following sample topics is accompanied by questions a writer might ask about the topic. These are just examples of the options you may choose from. As you research the topic, you may discover additional choices that could address the issue
Focus your argument on three or four persuasive reasons that provide support for the option you believe is better. Be sure to include a counterargument, followed by a refutation.
Sample Organizational Structure
- First paragraph: Introduction and thesis
- Second paragraph: First reason
- Third paragraph: Second reason
- Fourth paragraph: Third reason
