IS MAGGIE A VICTIM OF HER LIFE CIRCUMSTANCES OR DOES SHE MAKE SPECIFIC CHOICES IN HER LIFE THAT LEAD TO ITS OUTCOME?

                CONTROLLED RESEARCH PROJECT

This paper is based on your reading of Maggie: A Girl of the Streets by Stephen Crane and the subsequent research you do on the novella. Once you finish reading the novella, read about it in the sources contained in the “CONTROLLED RESEARCH PROJECT” button on CLASSES. Your entire paper will be an explanation and a justification of your conclusion (which will be your thesis statement). You may think that a research paper is simply the gathering and putting down of the information you find; such is not the case. You must make a cohesive argument that you prove to your reader. Your thesis statement MUST BE THE LAST SENTENCE OF YOUR FIRST PARAGRAPH; THERE IS NO EXCEPTION TO THIS RULE.

Work through the following procedures:

     1. make a survey of the material available on Maggie;

     2. read through your introductory sources;

     3. restrict your subject;

     4. decide precisely what you intend to do with your subject;

     5. begin preliminary outlining;

     6. complete your research.

The above steps are preparatory; go through them as quickly as possible.

You are required to have at least TWO sources, IN ADDITION TO THE NOVELLA ITSELF; that is, you will have AT LEAST THREE ENTRIES on your Works Cited page. These would be the novella itself, and A MINIMUM OF TWO OF THE SOURCES ON CLASSES. You cannot, repeat, cannot have any sources that come from anywhere else.

                                                                      General Comments

2. All documentation must follow the exact MLA format, without exception.

3. Do not write “this book deals with…” or anything similar.

4. If you plagiarize, you will receive an F for this assignment and your semester grade will be seriously compromised. DON’T DO IT!

5. You are not to refer to yourself in any way for this paper, including any form of “you.”
