Speech – Informative

Goal

To explain an issue of injustice in the world today in such a way that we understand the issue more completely and/or see it in a new way.

Time Frame

8-9 minutes

Task Description

Your first task will be to choose a topic.  Select an issue of injustice in the world today.  You can define “injustice” by your own standards.  You may pick any injustice you care about: famine, war, drought, sex trafficking, bullying in local schools, the media’s depiction of women in sitcoms, the rising cost of a college education, Eastern’s visitation hours, etc.  It’s up to you.  Part of your task will be to help us understand why the issue you selected is, in fact, an injustice.

Generating and selecting data is a very different process in this speech.  In the previous assignments, the data you used to construct a speech came largely from your own observations and experiences.  In this speech, however, you will need to go further than your own observations and experience (though those will remain useful sources of information).

In order to be successful with this speech you will need to qualify yourself to speak by doing research on your topic.  You need to provide accurate and important information about your topic.  Further, because this is an audience of intelligent and educated people, your information must be current and credible.  Therefore, to assure that you explore your topic thoroughly and share the most pertinent information with us, this speech must be supported by at least five (5) outside sources.  These sources should be cited in your speech and a reference page must be attached to your outline.

Decisions about organizing the data should be made based on your specific purpose.  As in the past, delivery should enhance your speech.  The use of visual aids is encouraged but not required.

You get to practice your speech on PitchVantage at least 6 times. Submit the best version for a grade.

*You will want to consider what you wear to deliver your speech. Remember our clothing is communication. It can either add to your credibility as a speaker or take away from your credibility. Use the opportunity to make wise choices.
