I wrote out a bit of the essay and added some context to the question. I will include the essay here and the 6 sources that can be used for this essay. It is only required to use 2 given sources.
how
the intersection of race and nation in Europe is today expressed in the
treatment of Roma people (so-called gypsies)?
The Roma people of Europe known as
“Gypsies”, despite being a deeply rooted ethnicity in Europe, are being
mistreated by others and their governments, which reflects the complex
intersection between race and nation. Despite the efforts to promote a melting
pot of social inclusion, The Roma people continue to face discrimination across
the world.
Throughout
the history of Europe, The Roma people have been marginalized, wrongfully
persecuted and decriminalized. This is due to the deeply entrenched stereotypes
created against the Roma communities to continue the segregation between the
Roma and other European ethnicities. The Roma, originally from the continent of
Asia, The Punjab region of Northern India, migrated to Europe between the 8th
and 10th centuries C.E.. Upon arriving to the communities and
nations of Europe, they were excluded from society and attempts to assimilate were
only to be responded with various forms of violence. (add quote, first nation
to receive roma people) This shaped the social, economic, and political reality
of the Roma people in Europe and their communities up to today. (add examples
of these discriminations)
Throughout
the years, legal frameworks that intended to create social inclusion and
prevent discrimination against the Roma were thwarted. (quote about country
that put pro Romi laws despite not doing anything, maybe add the education
quote too)This discrimination on the Roma manifests into every social form,
creating a glass ceiling on social acceptance. This discrimination includes unequal
access to health services, education and employment opportunities. Not only the
social system of nations are denied to the people of Romi, but also includes
the unequal treatment and violence against Roma individuals. These negative
stereotypes about the Roma community further exacerbates their marginalization,
contributing to their exclusion. (add evidence of the unequal access to
healthcare, education and discrimination)
Across
certain European countries, including the Nation of Hungary, have witnessed the
anti-Roma sentiment. Reports of hate crimes, segregation policies, and
discriminatory laws were put in place that highlights the persistence of
anti-Roma view across Europe. (add quote about italy’s concentration camps.
These laws fueled by Roma stigmatization, are “Justified” because of the
misconceptions about Roma Culture and lifestyle, creating harmful narratives
that justify this exclusion. (add quote about justifying being mean against
roma) (include examples of these laws, Italy)
European
governments and institutions are often criticized for their poor and lack of
response to addressing the discrimination committed on the Roma populations. As
stated before, despite their attemps to promote social inclusion and combat
discrimination, the situation still remains dire to many Roma communities
across Europe. The lack of Government intervention on the root cause of
discrimination led to this cycle. (find a quote on this and expand) (include
these policies that failed to address the discrimination, ineffective)
This
intersection between race and nation is further highlighted by the politics of
these nations. The priorities of these European leaders are often not concerned
about the Romi people. Although some politicians may advocate for the
solidarity within their countries, the needs of the Roma communities are often
overlooked and ignored. (expand and add quotes) (include the letter and the
lack of Romi support hungary letter) (they talk of unity but do not mention the
Romi people)
As of
today the Romi people are still often looked down upon due to the continuous
cycle of negative stereotypes and misconceptions about their culture. (expand)
In conclusion, the treatment of Roma people in Europe
reflects the intersection of race and nation, with systemic discrimination,
historical prejudices, and inadequate responses from governments contributing
to their marginalization. Addressing the root causes of discrimination and
promoting social inclusion are essential steps towards achieving equality and
justice for Roma communities in Europe. Only through concerted efforts to
challenge stereotypes, combat discrimination, and prioritize the needs of marginalized
ethnic groups can Europe truly live up to its ideals of diversity and
inclusivity. (change this and expand) (discuss potential solutions maybe)
