Your extended essay should be between 3,000 and 3,500 words and should be written in continuous prose. Generally, your extended essay should not include headings / sub-headings / lists, although there may be instances (in Science for example), where these may be used with the agreement of your supervisor.
Your finished essay should include a title page which details your name, education institution and date.
The essay should include a clear introduction which interprets the essay title and explains how you will structure your response to it (250-500 words).
The essay should then include a main body which presents your key information, arguments and analysis in a logically structured series of ‘linked / signposted’ paragraphs, which develop sequentially (2500 words +/- 300 words). Try to make sure that each paragraph introduces, defines, evidences, analyzes and links information on a single point and also signposts the material within the development of the overall planned response.
The essay should then develop its conclusion by summing up the key points extracted from the main body and using them to develop a clear response to the agreed essay question. Consider whether you have answered your agreed initial question and therefore whether you have met your research aims. Offer a short summary of the key points from the body of the essay and identify whether this has proven your initial hypothesis set out in the introduction. You may, if appropriate, also consider further questions arising from your research (250-500 words).
At the conclusion of the essay, please ensure you acknowledge all public sources of information used in your IAS according to the centre’s policy on academic referencing. This should be included as an appropriately structured reference list using Harvard APA 7th referencing.
