Please read the diagnostic instructions on the first page of the file attached to this lesson. Then read the prompt and write an essay in which you identify what you believe to be the author’s central point and respond to the idea in some way. Base your argument on evidence from the quoted material, from your own experience and observation, or from your own reading.
I’ll take a second to anticipate the most common questions and try to answer them. First, there is no minimum or maximum page requirement/limit. The emphasis here is on quality, not quantity. Second, this means that you will want to do exactly what the instructions say: respond to the main point of the essay with an idea of your own, and support it by referencing personal experience, other readings, or the article itself. Third, grammar, sentence structure, spelling, and coherence of sentences and thoughts all count, so if you have extra time, make sure to spend it proofreading and editing. Please feel free to email me with any additional questions.
