Please note that there are two essential requirements when writing your EMA:
- that you engage with material from at least two different blocks of the module for the EMA – failure to do so will be a contravention of the rubric and will be penalised by the markers
the links for the books are included. There are for 4 books you can choose from. Must use at least 2.
- that you make use of at least three sources (these can be primary, secondary or – ideally – both) which are taken from outside the module units. While you are encouraged to make use of more than three sources, this is a minimum requirement for the EMA – failure to do so will be a contravention of the rubric.
You must include reference to all three principal conflicts that the module discusses: the First World War, Second World War and Cold War, though you will be unable to cover everything in the module and should make choices as to suitable case studies and examples. You are asked to compare the relative influence of geopolitics against ideology in bringing about these wars, though you should recognise that these two broad categories interacted in practice. Remember to devote some space to defining these two types of cause to make your analysis more structured. Your answer needs to employ primary and secondary material from outside of the core module units. You should engage with some of the historiographical debates around this subject, too.
Please be sure to use a minimum of three sources in your assignment by incorporating quotes from primary and secondary sources and/or discussing arguments and interpretations in the literature. An EMA that makes use of only two sources will be penalised by 5 marks; an EMA making use of fewer than two sources may be penalised by a further 5 marks. By this point in the module, you will have developed significant practice making use of both primary and secondary sources, and you will have the opportunity to demonstrate those skills in your EMA.
