For your writing sample, you will compose a response of several paragraphs (a mini essay, if you will) where you reflect on the differences in rhetorical situation between ENG 101/your most recent non-ENG102 class and this upcoming ENG 102 section.

While both of these classes are the same “genre” [English classes], they differ a lot in other aspects of the rhetorical situation. In your response, I’ll be looking for a few specific points:

  • Identification and description of the specific audience, topic, and purpose (these three are required, but feel free to address the other aspects!)
  • A compare/contrast between the two rhetorical situations
  • A reflection on how you believe the differences and similarities in rhetorical situation will help you prepare for this class. What might you need to do differently? What strategies do you think will work the same?
  • Textual evidence to support your points. This could be in the form of quotes from your syllabi, essays from the past class, course calendars, assignments, etc.
