What is a Patient Education Handout?

A patient education handout is designed to provide key information about a topic. Sometimes, we call them “Fact Sheets.” Healthcare professionals often use them to inform patients about the significant points they need to know about their condition. Below are some examples of handouts for various conditions. Note how they provide short paragraphs, bullet points, and graphics.

Additional examples of what a patient handout is

The following links are examples to give you an idea of what a patient handout looks like. Note that these did not follow the directions you must follow. They only give you an idea of what a patient handout is. While some of these are one to four pages, remember that your handout will be TWO PAGES and must include the content outlined in the directions. Make your handout look professional! It should have correct spelling and grammar and be visually appealing. Pretend that you will be giving this to patients with the condition.

Directions:

You should have already chosen a topic/condition. If not, click on “People” and select one of the 5 conditions that still has space. Create a two-page client education handout (with a separate reference page), and submit it for peer review in the small group discussion. Now, you will make changes based on the feedback and submit your final project.

The handout should include the following:

  • TWO pages plus a reference page (see below for detailed directions about your references)
  • Written as a handout (short sections with limited verbiage and including bullet points, columns, or tables.
  • A minimum of two graphics – used to enhance the content
  • Sections of the handout should address the following:
    • Summary of the condition. i.e., How does the condition develop? What is the effect on the body? Why is it a serious health condition?
    • The lifestyle factors (and other risk factors) leading to the condition.
    • General nutrition recommendations.
    • Foods allowed and not allowed. i.e., the foods that should be limited/reduced or encouraged (normally in a table or columns). This must be a detailed list of foods on both sides. They must be in the students’ words (i.e., graphics should NOT replace the content you are being graded on).
    • Medications/supplements that are commonly used to treat the condition (can include necessary vitamins); and which should be avoided.
