Building on your prospectus, write an essay (eight pages minimum) in which you provide a close analysis of a text(M. NoubeSe Philip, “Discourse on the Logic of Language”) and ‘Things Fall Apart’ BY Achebe
of your choosing that utilizes at least two critical sources (with at least one being from the course). The one from the course would be(M. NourbeSe Philip, “In the Absence of Writing or How I Became a Spy”)
The main aim of this assignment is to provide you with an opportunity to utilize the critical vocabulary we have cultivated over the course of the semester and explore a topic or question related to the themes of vision and visuality. Overall, this class has attempted to push at the limits of representation and find different ways of thinking about the dynamics of seeing and being seen that interrogate the ways power structures the visual realm. Think of this paper as your opportunity to push at those limits and interrogate the dominant ways of seeing that organizes our everyday lives.
A strong paper will prioritize close readings of the literary works. Try to guide the reader through your interpretation rather than give a summary. If you are struggling with a concept or topic, I recommend that you refer to your scholarly sources for guidance and/or weave the doubt into your analysis as a question. Additionally, a strong paper
- offers a strong interpretation of textual materials that connect to other readings and/or larger themes of the class
- effectively distills and builds upon scholarly sources
- has a sophisticated and nuanced thesis
- is well written with minimal grammatical and spelling errors
- provides contextual information and precise interpretation of textual materials
- has strong transitions and a solid argumentative structure
- meets page requirements
- adheres to the MLA style guide
Format
Format your paper according to the following guidelines. Failure to follow formatting guidelines will result in a deduction of your grade.

- Be sure to proofread and spell-check your paper before turning them in.
- Include a title and page numbers.
- Your paper should be double-spaced, in Times New Roman, 12-point font.
- Use 1” margins on all four sides (at times with Microsoft Word, the default margin setting is 1.25”. You will have to adjust this by clicking “File” and then “Page Setup.”)
- Essays should follow the MLA citation guidelines, i.e., in-text citations that use parentheses, e.g. (Césaire 43). Check out the Purdue University ‘Owl’ website is a great resource: https://owl.english.purdue.edu/owl/resource/747/01/
